SENATOR CARLUCCI HOSTS SECOND ANNUAL VALENTINES FOR VETERANS CELEBRATION

Suffern, NY (February 10, 2012) – Surrounded by scores of local veterans, school administrators and distinguished guests, Senator David Carlucci (D-Rockland/Orange) today hosted his second annual Valentines for Veterans Celebration at the VFW Ramapo Post 2973 in Suffern.  The organized event amassed a whopping 2,500 valentines that were donated by more than 35 schools throughout the 38th State Senate District.

BROOKLYN -- Tonight, State Senator Daniel Squadron released the following statement upon a vote to approve the expansion of P.S. 8 to include a middle school:

Tonight's vote to approve the new P.S. 8 middle school is great news for Brooklyn! By heeding our calls and formalizing the new middle school, DOE is helping to ensure the continued success of P.S. 8 and creating better options for all District 13 students. Now we must work to get the new P.S. 8 middle school ready to go for next school year and continue to work for more options for District 13 students.

Senator Montgomery Announces NYSABPRL's 41st Annual Legislative Conference Workshop & Event Schedule

The 41st Annual Legislative Conference of the NYS Association of Black and Puerto Rican Legislators will convene on Friday, February 17th and conclude on Sunday, February 19th, 2012. The theme of this year’s conference is “Open Doors to Employment, Opens Doors to Empowerment."

School Bus Safety Bill Unanimously Passes Senate

The New York State Senate passed a bill that would ban certain criminal offenders from working on school buses (S.6157A). The bill prohibits people who are convicted of offenses, such as sex and drug crimes, from being school bus monitors.

The bill also bans anyone convicted under Leandra’s Law from being a school bus driver for five years after conviction. Leandra’s Law makes it a felony to drive drunk with others in the car who are under 16 years old.

“This is another measure we can take to make sure our children are safer on their way to school and on their way home. Anyone who would jeopardize a child’s safety should not be on a school bus,” said Senator Jack M. Martins, who supported the bill.

Senator Martins Brings 'Pizza and Politics' to Westbury High School

Senator Jack M. Martins brought his “Pizza and Politics” program to Westbury High School, where he met with members of the student council to discuss issues that affect the student body as well as current issues that are important in New York State.

The “Pizza and Politics” program was started by Senator Martins as a way to make government accessible to the students. The students council members are able to discuss political issues with the Senator over pizza, supplied by Senator Martins.
