Senator Adams, along with the New York State Black, Puerto Rican, Hispanic and Asian Legislative Caucus have reached out to the Governor in opposition to the proposed budget language for bill A.9056/S.6256 (Part O) which would allow the Office of Mental Health to close the Kingsboro Psychiatric Center in Brooklyn, New York.  Additionally, this bill recommends the elimination of the in-patient services of SUNY Downstate Hospital, an institution that has served the Flatbush community since 1967, relocating it to Long Island Hospital. Kingsboro Psychiatric Center is the only state-operated in-patient psychiatric center in Brooklyn.  Closing it will deny mental health care services to hundreds of seriously and persistently mentally ill and their families.  The pr

Senator Montgomery Announces NYSABPRL's 41st Annual Legislative Conference Workshop & Event Schedule

The 41st Annual Legislative Conference of the NYS Association of Black and Puerto Rican Legislators will convene on Friday, February 17th and conclude on Sunday, February 19th, 2012. The theme of this year’s conference is “Open Doors to Employment, Opens Doors to Empowerment."

New Bipartisan Pro-Choice Bloc Announces Leadership

Today, the newly-organized Bipartisan Pro-Choice Legislative Caucus (BPCLC) announced its new leadership team of four new co-chairs: Assemblymembers Ellen Jaffee (D-Suffern) and Teresa Sayward (R-Willsboro), and Senators Liz Krueger (D-Manhattan) and Andrea Stewart-Cousins (D-Yonkers).

The BPCLC is a bloc of more than 75 members of the state legislature committed to advancing women's health and reproductive choice in New York. The caucus counts among its members representatives from both houses and both the Republican and Democratic parties. The BPCLC's priority in the 2012 legislative session is the Reproductive Health Act, A. 6112 / S. 2844.

Senator Farley Announces Community Health Fair Slated for April 10th

State Senator Hugh T. Farley (R, C, I - Schenectady) will be hosting his annual health fair on Tuesday, April 10th, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the lower level of the Riverfront Center, Amsterdam.

"Called the Community Wellness Day, this event has always been successful in delivering information on services that local agencies provide to the public," Senator Farley said. "I’m currently in the planning stages for this year’s event and am looking for local non-profit and health organizations to participate."

The health fair is geared towards people of all ages and is set during the break week for local schools so families can participate. Those unable to attend can call Senator Farley’s office to obtain brochures and weblinks on health topics.
