New Bill Gives Law Enforcement Tools to Better Enforce Law and Hold Careless Drivers Accountable

NEW YORK – Today, State Senator Daniel Squadron and Assemblymember Brian Kavanagh announced new legislation to give law enforcement better tools to crack down on careless drivers who injure pedestrians and bicyclists. The bill strengthens “Hayley and Diego’s Law” (Vehicle & Traffic Law 1146), which was introduced after the tragic deaths of Hayley Ng, 4, and Diego Martinez, 3, who were killed in 2009 in Chinatown when a delivery van that was left in reverse jumped the curb and hit the children.

SENATOR FUSCHILLO: NEW YORK STATE’S COMPLETE STREETS LAW TAKES EFFECT THIS SATURDAY

        Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) today announced that New York State’s “complete streets” law, which he authored to help make roadways safer for all who use them, takes effect this Saturday, February 11th.

        "This law will help save lives and make our roads safer for everyone. Complete streets design principles have been proven to reduce fatalities and injuries. Taking them into consideration on future projects will help safeguard drivers, pedestrians, and bicyclists of all ages and abilities while they’re on the roads,” said Senator Fuschillo, Chairman of the Senate’s Transportation Committee.

Senate Passes School Bus Safety Bills

Bills intended to make riding bus safer for students, enhance communication, and make “school bus” signs more economical

 

The New York State Senate yesterday passed a series school bus bills that will ensure child safety and enhanced communication.

 

A bill was passed, sponsored by Senator John Bonacic, that increases the penalties for passing a stopped school bus (S.3099A). The legislation would impose a sixty day suspension of a driver’s license if convicted of passing a stopped school bus two or more times.

This legislation would make the penalties for passing a stopped school bus multiple times the same as penalties for drivers convicted of speeding in a construction zone two or more times.

SENATOR FUSCHILLO ANNOUNCES PUBLIC HEARING ON DISTRACTED DRIVING MONDAY, FEBRUARY 13TH

        Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick), Chairman of the Senate’s Transportation Committee, announced that the Committee will be holding a public hearing on distracted driving this Monday, February 13th at 10 am in Hearing Room A of the State Legislative Office Building in Albany. The public hearing will examine the National Transportation Safety Board’s (NTSB) December 2011 recommendations on distracted driving and explore how New York State can better prevent distracted driving on its roadways.

SENATE TRANSPORTATION COMMITTEE APPROVES LEGISLATION TO ENSURE REPEAT ALCOHOL OFFENDERS FACE APPROPRIATE PENALTIES

        Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick), Chairman of the Senate’s Transportation Committee, announced that the committee has approved legislation to ensure that individuals with prior convictions of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated are treated as repeat offenders, regardless of the vehicle type.

Senate Passes Package of School Bus Bills

ALBANY, 02/06/12 – The New York State Senate today passed a series of school bus bills that will ensure child safety and enhanced communication.

A bill, sponsored by Senator James L. Seward R/C/I-Oneonta), that would give school districts the option to put their website on their school buses (S.2371) was among those receiving approval.
