Queens Gazette quoted Senator Gianaris from the press release announcing of millions of dollars in funding for City Year New York. This initiative was led by Congresswoman Maloney, and Senator Gianaris is grateful for her hard work to make this happen.
At Public School 112 in Long Island City, Congressmember Carolyn Maloney (D-Queens/Manhattan) announced that City Year New York has received a $2,921,000 AmeriCorps grant from the federal Corporation for National and Community Service. Approximately $552,000 of this award will fund City Year corps members serving in Long Island City schools. Queens Borough President Helen Marshall, Councilmember Jimmy Van Bramer, Susan Stern of the state Commission on National & Community Service, Itai Dinour of City Year New York, P.S. 112 Principal Rafael Campos, City Year Corps Members and students joined Maloney at the event.
“The receipt of millions of dollars for an essential education initiative like City Year is reason to celebrate, particularly as we continue to struggle with severe budget cuts forced upon us by the difficult economy. I thank Congresswoman Maloney for bringing us together for today’s announcement so we can continue instilling the importance of education in our young people,” state Senator Michael Gianaris said.
