The State Board of Elections met in an emergency meeting late yesterday and approved an extension of the deadline for absentee ballot applications as New Yorkers continue to deal with the fallout of Hurricane Sandy. The original deadline for applications transmitted by mail, fax or letter was October 30th, it is now Friday, November 2nd. This extension applies statewide.
Voters may still go to their local board of elections and cast an absentee ballot in person up to Monday, November 5th.
The polls will be open in New York on Tuesday, November 6th from 6 am to 9 pm. For changes to any poll site in areas impacted by Hurricane Sandy, please keep checking our website, www.elections.ny.gov , or your local county Board of Elections website.
State Board also acted to extend the deadline for absentee ballots themselves to be returned to each local Board of Elections by an additional 6 days, from November 13 to November 19. Ballots returned by mail still must be postmarked by Monday, November 5.
Completed absentee ballots may also be submitted in person by a voters designee to the appropriate Board of Elections before polls close on election day, Tuesday, November 6th, by 9 pm.
