Senator Phil Boyle First to Submit Amendment to Cuomo Gun Bill: Change Would Allow Exemptions for Retired Law Enforcement

Babylon, NY -- Senator Phil Boyle (R-East Islip) introduced legislation that would amend New York's Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement (SAFE) Act, which was signed into law by Governor Cuomo on Tuesday.  The amendment would allow exemptions for retired law enforcement officers and is the first proposed amendment to the one-day old gun control law. 

“I voted for this law because it increased penalties on crimes committed with guns,” said Senator Boyle.  “In the coming weeks, I will be offering a series of amendments to protect the Second Amendment rights of legal gun owners and to strengthen the law’s stated intent of protecting our children and neighbors.”

"Retired law enforcement officers who choose to carry properly permitted weapons provide our communities with an additional layer of safety and security," said Senator Phil Boyle.  “As the new law is written, these men and women would be placed at a tactical disadvantage and potentially in life-threatening danger should they have to act against an armed adversary." 

Under the new law, all gun owners including retired law enforcement officers, are barred from loading their magazines with more than seven rounds.  Previous law mandated a ten round limit. 

"My amendment would allow these protectors of the community, who are educated and experienced in the use of firearms, an exemption from the new seven-round limit," said Senator Boyle.
