Statement From Senate President Malcolm A. Smith, Majority Leader Pedro Espada, Jr., And Democratic Conference Leader John L. Sampson Re: Confirmation of Judge Sotomayor To The U.S. Supreme Court

“We congratulate Judge Sonia Sotomayor on her historic appointment to the U.S. Supreme Court and commend President Obama for his exceptional choice. Prior to her appointment, Judge Sotomayor earned an extraordinary reputation as a fair and brilliant jurist committed to upholding the law and dedicated to the greater ideals upon which our country was founded.  

We can think of no more qualified person worthy of   serving on our nation’s highest court.   As the first Hispanic woman appointed to the Court, Judge Sotomayor is an inspiration to the Latino community in New York and across the country. 

It is a privilege and an honor to have a Bronx-born representative   as a member of the Supreme Court, and we know she will make us all proud.”
