(New York, NY)- New York State Senator Bill Perkins, Chair of the Senate’s Committee on Corporations, Authorities and Commissions, announced a hearing to be held Monday, October 19, 2009 at 10:00 A.M. on the New York State Inspector General’s report entitled Investigation of the Waterfront Commission of New York Harbor. This hearing will examine what changes have been implemented as a result of the report and to assess what further changes must be made to the Waterfront Commission in order to ensure it carries out its intended duty as prescribed by its enacting statute. Additionally, the hearing will focus on S.5039, legislation authorizing employers at the Port of New York and New Jersey to control the size of the longshore workforce.
“The Waterfront Commission provides a vitally important service for the State of New York. It has been vested with the responsibility of investigating, deterring, combating, and remedying criminal activity and influence in the Port of New York and New Jersey, a responsibility that cannot be taken lightly,” said Senator Perkins. “This hearing will provide the public with an opportunity to learn about past allegations of criminal activity on behalf of former Waterfront Commission employees and to examine what has been done to correct the alleged abuses and lack of accountability.”
"I am pleased that the Committee on Corporations, Authorities and Commissions is holding this hearing," said Senator Bill Larkin (R-C, Cornwall-on-Hudson). "I am hopeful that those who testify will provide us with a clearer picture of what needs to be done to clean up the waterfront once and for all."
“This hearing will allow us to clarify certain issues facing the Waterfront Commission,” said Senator Ruth Hassell-Thompson. “In particular, we will examine Senate Bill 5039, and hear testimony from experts who will provide the public with a clear picture of what is really occurring at the waterfront.”
