Senator Malcolm A. Smith will host the 1st NYS Senate Virtual Town Hall to discuss the proposed phase-out and eventual closures of three high schools in Queens, in and around his district: Beach Channel High School, Business, Computer Applications, and Entrepreneurship High School and Jamaica High School. The Panel for Education Policy (PEP), which is controlled by the Mayor and there are members from each Borough, is scheduled to vote on these matters at their meeting on January 26, 2010.
The purpose of our virtual town hall is to provide students, parents and educators an opportunity to obtain information about the potential closures as it relates to the current educational structures and the proposed replacements. Additionally, this will be an opportunity for community input as to the future of our local schools. Join us Friday, 22 January from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM[1] at http://www.nysenate.gov/smitheducationtownhall[2] for our virtual town hall.
Guests will include staff from the DOE Divisions of Portfolio Planning and External Affairs, as well as members of the Senator Malcolm A. Smith Education Advisory Committee. Senator Smith will moderate the discussion of pre-selected questions that have been submitted via e-mail as well as live questions.
This event is a first for the New York State Senate, combining traditional grassroots outreach with forward-thinking technology to connect constituents to the issues that are important to them.
