As part of his 2010-2011 budget, the Governor has proposed a law that would allow grocery stores to sell wine and liquor. Although I understand the issue from a consumer point of view, I disagree with this move. Liquor stores are often family-owned and, at a time when the community needs family-owned businesses to thrive, the Governor’s proposal could have very serious adverse impacts on these local businesses, while helping larger chains that are often not based in the community. Small businesses are the backbone of communities and our economy, and I believe that in this instance, they deserve to be supported..
