Senator Krueger Welcomes Push By Moms Demand Action

New York – State Senator Liz Krueger today welcomed a new campaign by gun safety advocates Everytown for Gun Safety and Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America to reduce injuries and deaths of children across the country resulting from unintentional shootings.  The public education campaign, launched in anticipation of Mothers’ Day and called “Be SMART,” includes the #NotAnAccident Index and interactive map, a tool used for tracking unintentional shootings involving children.  The new campaign comes a week after Republican Senators in the Codes Committee voted down legislation sponsored by Sen.

Senate Environmental Conservation Committee Kills MTS Legislation

New York –  In a 7 to 6 vote, the State Senate Environmental Conservation Committee today killed legislation (S.2556) introduced by Senator Liz Krueger that would ban the construction of any solid waste marine transfer station (MTS) within 800 feet of public housing. The legislation would apply to the proposed East 91st Street MTS site, as well as any other site near NYCHA developments. Assembly Member Rebecca Seawright carries the Assembly version of the bill (A.5903).

Senate Codes Committee Votes Down Gun Safety Legislation

New York – Today the State Senate Codes Committee voted down the Children’s Weapon Accident Prevention Act (S.2491), sponsored by Senator Liz Krueger, along with Senators Avella, Gianaris, Hamilton, Hoylman and Parker.  The bill would have protected children from accidental harm and death by making it a crime to fail to store a firearm safely and securely.

amNY: Evicted Upper East Sider gets her apartment back after a 20-month nightmare

On Friday, amNY reported the story of an Upper East Side resident who went through a nearly two-year ordeal of eviction before regaining her apartment.  Particular praise goes to MFY Legal Services and all those who helped Ms. Morisada through the process of challenging her eviction and subsequent actions by the landlord.

Senator Krueger, Assembly Member O'Donnell Release Letter To Gov. Cuomo Calling For Summit ASAP And Immediate Suspension Of Email Deletion

New York – State Senator Liz Krueger and Assembly Member Daniel O’Donnell today released a letter to Governor Andrew Cuomo, urging him to follow through on a proposed email retention and transparency summit as soon as possible, and to immediately suspend his administration’s 90-day email deletion policy.  The letter also strongly recommends the inclusion of policy experts in the discussion, including Robert J. Freeman, Executive Director of the Committee on Open Government (COOG), as well as state archive staff and representatives of the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA).

Senator Krueger, Assembly Member O'Donnell Introduce Bill To Regulate Email Deletion By State Officials

New York – State Senator Liz Krueger and Assembly Member Daniel O’Donnell today introduced a bill to regulate email retention policy for New York State officials and extend existing Freedom of Information Act requirements to the state legislature.  The legislation is based on the Federal “Capstone” email retention policy, which was adopted after extensive study of best practices for handling electronic records.  It would establish strict standards for permanent preservation of the records of policymakers, including statewide public officials, state legislators and senior agency positions, among others, and prohibit deletion of emails from other government officials for at least seven years.

Senate Democratic Conference Outlines Budget Requests

Albany, NY - The Senate Democratic Conference have outlined their budget requests for the state’s 2015-2016 budget following analysis of the Governor’s Executive Budget and testimonies provided by various stakeholders during the Joint Legislative Budget Hearings. The outline highlights their strong concerns over the Governor’s attempt to force policies through an appropriation bill and reiterates that such policies, many of which are supported including their ethics reform measures, should be passed separately and immediately.
