Brennan / Krueger Bill to Force Correction of Dangerous Construction Violations Signed by Governor Paterson

A bill to improve construction safety sponsored by Assemblymember Jim Brennan and State Senator Liz Krueger was signed into law on July 29th by Governor Paterson. The legislation, developed out of 2005 and 2008 hearings by the Assembly Cities and Codes committees on construction safety, requires contractors and developers to certify correction of violations posing an imminent threat to public safety or face shutdown of their worksites, as well as significant penalties.

East Side Electeds Express Extreme Disappointment over DEC Marine Transfer Station Decision

New York—East Side elected officials joined together in expressing their extreme disappointment over the Department of Environmental Conservation’s (DEC) decision to approve permits for a Marine Transfer Station (MTS) at East 91st Street.  In response, the Gracie Point Community Council is investigating the possibility of filing an Article 78 lawsuit with the State Supreme Court in order to block the DEC’s decision.  For years the East Side electeds and the community have actively opposed the siting of an MTS at East 91st Street.

Comprehensive Economic Development Plan Will Benefit Wineries, Allow Sales in Grocery Stores & Enact Major Blue Law Reforms (Albany, NY) In a move that will provide much-needed economic development to struggling wineries, grape growers, and small businesses, a comprehensive proposal has been introduced in the New York State Senate that will allow for the sale of wine in supermarkets and grocery stores and also enact vital reforms to the state’s “Blue Laws” to benefit liquor store owners.

Senate Passes Liz Krueger's Major Construction Safety Legislation Including Civil Penalties for Hazardous Violations

Senator Krueger Calls it a Major Victory for Ensuring Public Safety

Albany, NY—New York City won a huge victory for construction and building safety today when the New York State Senate passed a bill creating new guidelines for the re-inspection of all hazardous violations issued by the NYC Department of Buildings (DoB) and civil penalties for hazardous violations.  The bill was sponsored by Senator Liz Krueger whose district was the site of two deadly crane collapses within the last year.

Public school students from P.S. 77 will spend a morning learning about maple syrup's history and production through a variety of interactive workshops. Maple syrup has been a staple of New York's agricultural industry dating back to pre-colonial times. To this day the maple syrup industry in upstate New York provides many jobs and is a significant part of the State's economy.

Calls it a Win for the Environmental and Business Communities Albany— An expanded Bottle Bill finally received the New York State Senate’s approval after being bottled up for several years under the Republican controlled State Senate. In the original Bottle Bill, passed in 1982, only carbonated beverages such as soda and beer required a 5 cent deposit.  The new bill will expand the original Bottle Bill to include bottled water.

"I am pleased that for the first time the Senate has implemented the requirement from the 2007 Budget Reform Act which provides that Senators have a summary of impacts of changes in the Executive Budget on their desks before the budget vote. The document provided to legislators and available online on the Senate website provides a section by section report on how the final budget changes the executive budget.
