Rent Guidelines Board Votes to Freeze Rents/ Albany Passes Rent laws

The Rent Guidelines Board, which determines rent increases for more than one million rent-stabilized apartments in New York City, voted on Monday night for an historic rent freeze on one-year leases and a two percent increase for two year leases.

Who are being asked to pay an ever increasing percentage of their income towards rent, while landlords have increased their profits due to relatively flat operating costs.

Housing Town Hall Meeting at the Washington Heights Academy

A packed house at Inwood Academy for the housing forum on rent regulations. The expiration of these laws would have a devastating impact on our community but we simply cannot settle for their extension, these laws must be strengthened. In the last 4 years 35,000 rent regulated units have been lost, more than 200,000 have been lost in the last two decades. To stop this loss of affordable housing we need stronger rent laws that stop deregulation and massive rent increases which force tenants out of their homes.
