Today, Senator Adriano Espaillat (D – Manhattan/Bronx) expressed his deep concern about the North River Sewage Plant explosion, which has had a wide-ranging impact on the Northern Manhattan community. Since the explosion, which took place on Tuesday, July 19th, over 120 million gallons of raw sewage has been dumped into the Hudson River. The accident, and ensuing dumping of sewage into the river, has caused pollution, odor, inconvenience, and a serious health risk for local residents.
Shortly after 10:30 pm tonight, the New York State Senate passed marriage equality by a 33 – 29 vote. After voting “Yes” on the legislation, Senator Adriano Espaillat (D – Manhattan/Bronx) released the following statement:

(Albany, NY) – With rent regulations that protect affordable housing for over 2.5 million tenants set to expire on June 15th, hundreds of New York City tenants joined Senator Adriano Espaillat (D – Manhattan/Bronx) to express the urgent need to extend and strengthen rent regulations.

Senate Democrats release new video demonstrating urgency on rent regulations issues
(New York, NY) – Today, Senate Democrats released an important video about the need to extend and strengthen rent regulations. The powerful video features Senator Adriano Espaillat and other advocates of rent regulations in the Senate, as well as everyday tenants who would be devastated if rent regulations are allowed to expire on June 15th.
Today, the New York State Senate passed an important bill sponsored by Senator Adriano Espaillat (D – Manhattan/Bronx) which makes it easier for tenants to hold meetings in buildings operated by the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA).
The legislation (S. 3114) will permit tenants to hold meetings in a common area of NYCHA operated buildings without any fee. Currently, tenant groups and committees, that may not be able to afford a costly social room, sometimes hold meetings in individual apartments or open spaces in possible violation of building codes.
