With rent control rules set to expire in June, 2011, State Senator Adriano Espaillat, lead sponsor of legislation to extend tenant protections, held a press conference on the steps of New York City Hall on Thursday, February 24th.
State Senator Adriano Espaillat, with Sens. Bill Perkins and Jose Serrano, and Assemblyman Robert Rodriguez called for an emergency meeting with NYC Housing Authority chairman, John Rhea in an open letter on February 10th. The meeting is to address a spike in housing crime.
At a housing rally on February 24th in support of Sen. Espaillat's recently introduced legislation S.2783A, which would extend and strengthen tenant laws in New York City, it was proposed that the budget should not be considered until the rent laws are passed.
With rent regulation laws that protect over 1 million units of affordable housing in New York City dangerously close to expiring, Senator Adriano Espaillat was joined by his Senate colleagues, City elected officials, and over 150 advocates to call for the immediate extension and expansion of tenant protections.
