Lawmakers, College Officials React to Regional Council Awards (Source: Albany Watch)

Nearly $716 million in grants, tax breaks and other incentives were awarded Wednesday as part of the state’s annual Regional Economic Development Council awards, with the Mid-Hudson region raking in about $59 million—the sixth-largest of 10 awards. Afterward, it was all smiles from state lawmakers, education officials and other council members, including Senate Democratic Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins, D-Yonkers.

80th Anniversary of Deadly Forced Famine, Holodomor, Remembered (Source:


Colonie, NY - A little known tragedy in world history was remembered tonight as Ukrainian Americans in the Capital District begin a week of activities to mark 80 years since the forced famine that killed millions in the 1930’s.

An exhibit on what’s called the Holodomor, or death by hunger, is on display all week at the Colonie Town Library.

On Monday night the library was also the site of the screening of a documentary on the famine genocide.

$1.8 Billion Awarded to Build 676 New LIRR and Metro-North Rail Cars

The Board of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has approved a contract with Kawasaki Rail Car, Inc. for up to $1.83 billion to design and build the next generation of rail cars for the Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North Railroad. The MTA expects up to 676 cars will be assembled at Kawasaki’s plant in Yonkers and anticipates up to 1,500 people will be employed in New York State.

The Village of Tarrytown will be reimbursed $250,000 for building 167 parking spaces at the Tarrytown train station in 2011.

The funding comes from unused multi modal transportation funds that were awarded to the Village in 1999 for a separate project. New York State Sen. Andrea Stewart-Cousins asked for authorization to use the funds after recognizing the need for further parking at the Tarrytown train station.

Last week, the New York State Senate and Assembly passed bills authorizing Westchester County to transfer approximately six-tenths of an acre of parkland on the north border of Sprain Ridge Park to the town of Greenburgh for the purpose of making needed safety improvements to the section of Jackson Avenue from the Park entrance to the intersection with North Sprain Road.

The White Plains Juneteenth Heritage Committee had the opportunity this year to share the cultural significance of Juneteenth with the larger community. Under the notable leadership of Chairman Bernie Thombs, The White Plains First Annual Juneteenth Awards Gala and 9th Annual Heritage Festival allowed the whole community to come together and celebrate. Juneteenth’s theme this year was “Drums of Freedom”- Always Faithful, and both events were characterized by the Afrocentric elements of the drums and the collective spirit.

Dozens of protesters donned dollar bill costumes and took to the Capitol lawn last Wednesday in the hope of getting the Fair Elections Act (S.4705-a) to the floor of the Senate before the end of the session.

The protest was comprised of several different groups including the Fair Elections for New York campaign, the anti-corruption group Represent. Us and Stamp Stampede, an organization that stamps anti-bribery messages onto dollar bills.

Meanwhile, State Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins just announced the passage of a bill in the state senate requiring the state to pay for unfunded mandates.

The bill requires the state to fund any mandated program imposed on local governments and school districts and would protect local municipalities from bearing the cost of programs created and/ or originated by the State, allowing local officials to set their own priorities without the possibility of future unfunded mandated programs disrupting their budgets.

Senate Democrats want the Senate leadership to hold a vote on the women’s agenda detailed today by Gov. Andrew Cuomo, including strengthening abortion laws in New York.

“All 10 points of this legislative package are crucial for the women of New York including the reproductive health legislation.
