Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins introduced and passed a Legislative Resolution today, recognizing the hard work and achievements of the independent living movement on behalf of New Yorkers with disabilities. Independent Living Centers (ILCs) in New York State are part of a national network of centers that provide support, resources, and services to assist individuals in becoming as independent as possible.

LoHud: Senate passes resolution honoring Gannett’s Jay Gallagher

With his family watching on, the state Senate approved a resolution honoring longtime Gannett Albany bureau chief Jay Gallagher who died on Monday.

The resolution was sponsored by Sen. Andrew Stewart-Cousins, D-Yonkers. Both Republican and Democratic senators from upstate, downstate, western New York and city paid tribute to Jay. Westchester Herald: Sen. Stewart-Cousins Announces Legislation to Empower Law Enforcement Against Vehicle Thefts

On May 18th, Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins (35th SD) announced passage of legislation (S1899A) to provide law enforcement with new tools to prosecute career car thieves. This bill, introduced by Deputy Majority Leader Jeff Klein (D-Bronx) makes it easier to bring felony auto theft charges against suspects previously convicted of a broader range of vehicle related crimes, assisting police and prosecutors in their efforts to break up auto theft rings.

$3.25 million in funding for research facility at New York Medical College

Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins and Senate Majority Conference Leader John Sampson with the New York Medical College (NYMC) announced an award of $3.25 million to NYMC for a Hudson Valley Biotechnology Center for Disaster Medicine and Emerging Infections. Funding was secured through the New York State Senate Gen*NY*sis program to upgrade and modernize an existing building to accommodate this biotechnology facility.

Cycling enthusiasts, political figures, state and local officials, environmentalists and planners will gather at the Greenburgh Town Hall May 6, for the 2nd annual Westchester Bike Summit. The focus of the session is, “to make the region more friendly to those who get around on two wheels,” according to the Bike Walk Alliance of Westchester and Putnam.

Journal News: Utilities agree to hear public's concerns

State utility regulators are opening up a public discussion of the best way to protect electricity transmission lines without companies clear-cutting everything in their path.

"I think we heard that perhaps there can be some improvements in how utilities do it," said Anne Dalton, a spokeswoman from the state Public Service Commission.

LoHud: Stewart-Cousins: Restore STAR Rebates For Seniors

One of the main budget battles now appears to be the fight over whether to restore STAR property-tax rebate checks to seniors in the budget.

The idea has been knocked by Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Gov. David Paterson, but Senate Democrats continue to seek $500 million in property-tax relief in this year’s budget.

Sen. Andrea-Stewart Cousins, D-Yonkers, said “restoring the senior STAR rebate program, which I believe is a critical component that must be included in the final budget agreement.”

Yonkers Rising: Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins Congratulates Students From YMCA Youth & Government Group

Last week, Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins presented certificates of achievement to participants of the YMCA Youth and Government Group at a reception held at Mercy College in Dobbs Ferry. Last year, Stewart-Cousins secured funding through a legislative grant to create the Youth and Government Group, comprised of students from Pleasantville High School and the Yonkers YMCA.

WIVB: Senate dems committed to saving parks

On Monday, the Majority Conference unanimously voted for a budget resolution which restored all $11.5 million of the Governor’s budget cuts to parks operations. If enacted, the cut would have resulted in the closure of 57 State Parks and reduced operations at an additional 22 State Parks.

Empire State News: Senator says progress being made with 9/11 related worker claims

NEW YORK - State Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins (D/WF – 35th District), the Senate sponsor of “Jimmy Nolan’s Law”, which allowed 9/11 workers a one year extension to file injury claims, announced today that she was encouraged that New York City is finally taking steps to resolve the claims of thousands of workers who have sustained long term health problems as a result of their work at the World Trade Center site.
