Westchester County DSS "Heart Gallery" Opening Reception

(White Plains - October 8th) The Heart Gallery opened in White Plains at the public library to promote foster care opportunities in Westchester County. Senator Stewart-Cousins and Assembly Member David Buchwald joined Westchester County Social Services Commissioner Kevin McGuire and Braveheart members including Darryl McDaniels of the rap group Run DMC, who was adopted.

Meet & Greet with Honor Flight Participants

(Valhalla - October 5th) Senator Stewart-Cousins had the privilege to attend a gathering for the Westchester-based World War II veterans taking the Honor flight. Through charitable donations, these veterans were flown to Washington, D.C. to view the World War II Memorial there. Some of those in attendance participated in the Town of Greenburgh's Veteran's Living History Project.

(Albany - October 6th) Senator Stewart-Cousins addressed the New York State United Teachers at their 2014 Retiree Leadership Meeting in Albany, and caught up with Westchester's (from left to right) Alana Cormican, Dolores Thompson and Florence McCue, at-large Director for NYSUT retirees. NYSUT represents 600,000 educators, health care professionals and municipal employees statewide, including 200,000 retirees.

Westchester County Golden Harvest Dance & Talent Show for Seniors

(White Plains - October 1st) Senator Stewart-Cousnis watched senior citizens showcase their many talents during the annual Golden Harvest Dance & Talent Show at the Westchester County Center. The special event which kicked off at 11AM with a talent show followed by a dance was sponsored by Westchester County’s Departments of Parks and Senior Programs and Services and the Westchester Public/Private Partnership for Aging Services.

(New Rochelle - October 3rd) Senator Stewart-Cousins attended the Westchester Hispanic Law Enforcement Association Annual Scholarship Dinner which honored Hon. Maria S. Vazquez-Doles, David E. Chong, and Louis Navarro. The Westchester Hispanic Law Enforcement Association is a non-profit organization created to inspire, support, foster, and realize leadership in Westchester law enforcement.

New Rochelle Honorary Renaming of Library Green in Honor of Ruby Dee

(New Rochelle - October 2nd) Senator Stewart-Cousins was in New Rochelle for the dedication of the Ruby Dee Park. The Library Green was renamed for the actress and civil rights activist who called New Rochelle home and raised her family here along with her actor and activist husband, Ossie Davis. Her grandson, Muta'Ali and her daughter Nora Davis Day, were on hand as were so many who wanted to participate in this important event.

Walk To End Alzheimer's Disease

(White Plains - September 28th) A great crowd at Sunday's Walk to End Alzheimer's Disease in White Plains, with a group of Muslim women who were participating, and the Senator's friends and partners in government, Congresswoman Nita Lowey and Assemblyman David Buchwald. The Alzheimer's Association of the Hudson Valley is the resource for families and caregivers to learn more including these statistics: more than 5 million Americans are living with the disease; every 67 seconds someone in the United States develops Alzheimer's and Alzheimer's disease is the 6th leading cause of death in the United States.

(Yonkers - September 28th) Senator Stewart-Cousins continued the celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month by walking the Puerto Rican/Hispanic Parade, and meetnig and greeting her Yonkers constituents from Lincoln Park on South Broadway to Getty Square. This year's theme "Unidos Por Un Futuro Mejor"--"United for a Better Future"--showcases the various and significant contributions Puerto Ricans/Hispanics have made locally in the City of Yonkers as well as nationally.

Dobbs Ferry Senior Citizen's Back to School Party

(Dobbs Ferry - September 23rd) The Embassy Community Center located in Dobbs Ferry kicked off the Fall season with a "Back-to-School" Party to introduce seniors to upcoming fall classes and special seminars. Various senior groups including Dr. United, Pace Woman’s Justice, Mercy College, Westchester Jewish Family Service, among others came to the party to share information about what's going on in their organizations this season. The Senator took part in the kickoff by greeting seniors and learned one of her 89 year-old constituents is getting married to a childhood sweetheart.

White Plains Hispanic Day Festival

(White Plains - September 21st) Senator Stewart-Cousins celebrating the Hispanic Heritage Month at the White Plains Hispanic Day Festival. Hispanic Heritage Month began on September 15th, a time to recognize and celebrate the cultures and contributions that descendants from Mexico, Spano, the Caribbean, Central and South America have made to our country.The month-long celebration includes the Independence Days for countries including Mexico, Chile, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Columbus Day or Dia De La Raza, falls on October 12th.

Quinnstock: A Quinn for the Win Event Fighting ALS

Senator Stewart-Cousins appeared at the Quinnstock event in Yonkers on Saturday, September 20th, to support Yonkers native Pat Quinn of Quinn for the Win and his wife, Jen. Pat founded the Ice Bucket Challenge to raise money for ALS, a disease he suffers from, and aided the Senator with her Ice Bucket Challenge.

Greenway Shoprite's Help Bag For Hunger

To continue her efforts in the fight against hunger, Senator Stewart-Cousins, along with Assemblymembers Shelley Mayer and Gary Pretlow, took part in Greenway ShopRite's "Help Bag Food for Hunger" Event on Wednesday, September 17th, during National Hunger Awareness Month. This year’s ShopRite Partners In Caring contest issued a new challenge to ShopRite associates – to raise an unprecedented $1.5 million to support food banks in the communities ShopRite serves.

Senator Stewart-Cousins was one of the co-sponsors of the VNSNY Choice "Preventing Falls Among Seniors" Seminar which took place on Wednesday, September 17th, at the Coyne Park Community Center in Yonkers. The purpose of the seminar was to provide seniors and their loved ones tips and techniques to stay strong on their feet. Also at the event, and co-sponsors of the seminar, were Mayor Mike Spano, Senator George Latimer, Assemblymember Shelley Mayer, and Assemblymember Gary Pretlow.

(Yonkers - September 18th) Senator Stewart-Cousins was pleased to be able to personally recognize marriage equality pioneer Edie Windsor at an event sponsored by the Westchester Jewish Community Services Center Lane, the only LGBTQ Youth and Community Education Center in Westchester County. The Senator said, "Edie is an inspiration for both young and old alike for fighting for equal rights and the historic Supreme Court decision that has set a benchmark for other court decisions that have followed."

The Yitzhak Rabin Peacemaker Award Ceremony

Senator Stewart-Cousins took part in the Yitzhak Rabin Peacemaker Award Ceremony on Wednesday, September 17th, in New Rochelle City Hall to recognize this year's recipient for their service to the community. This year's recipients were the Rev. Hyacinth E. Lee, deacon at Trinity St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and Joel Fridovich, administrator of Campus Alternative High School. The mission of the Coalition for Mutual Respect is "to improve human relations and understanding, while instilling respect for the different ethnicities and faiths of the richly cultured populations of New Rochelle and Westchester County".

State Delegation Calls on MTA/Metro-North to Include White Plains Train Station in 5-Year Capital Plan

(White Plains - September 18th) Senator Stewart-Cousins joined the three other members of the state delegation representing White Plains (Senator George Latimer, and Assemblymembers Amy Paulin and David Buchwald), along with Mayor Thomas Roach, Congresswoman Nita Lowey's representative, and Veronica Vanderpool of the Tri-State Transportation Campaign at the Metro-North train station. Collectively, they asked the MTA/Metro-North to include an upgrade to this facility as part of the 5-year Capital Plan. The station services approximately 21,000 commuters on a daily basis, not only the Senator's constituents in White Plains, but also reverse commuters from Manhattan coming to the region for work.

Mill Street Press Conference

Senator Stewart-Cousins helped kick off the demolition of a building on Warburton Avenue that will make way for Phase Two of the Saw Mill River Daylighting Project in downtown Yonkers. $1 million in state funding through the Regional Economic Development Council is making the Mill Street Courtyard possible. Phase 1 of the project, completed with $8 million in funding the Senator secured when she first took office in 2007, created Van der Donck Park by removing the asphalt and the parking lot at Larkin Plaza, exposing the Saw Mill River and creating the park that surrounds the river. This project is a key catalyst to revive the downtown area with new retail, business and housing opportunities.

Heavenly Productions Foundation Backpack Donation Event

Thanks to the Heavenly Productions Foundation, 600 backpacks and other school supplies were given to the Martin Luther King, Jr. Academy in Yonkers on Friday, September 12th. Senator Stewart-Cousins joined Mayor Mike Spano, Principal Natalie Davy, Dr. Kathy Reilly Fallon, Co-Founder and Chairwoman of Heavenly Productions Foundation, and John Wallace, former New York Knicks player and board member of the foundation.
