Meeting with Lower Hudson Valley Council of School Superintendents

On Friday, December 13th, the Lower Hudson Valley Council of School Superintendents hosted their annual legislative meeting to discuss education policy for the upcoming legislative year. As she does every year, Senator Stewart-Cousins participated in the meeting. Two of the main topics of concern shared by the Superintendents were the implementation of the Common Core Standards and the sharing of student data with third parties. Senator Stewart-Cousins explained that she supports a slower phase-in of the Common Core implementation, and also supports allowing parents to opt-out of having their student's data shared with third parties.

International Human Rights Day Celebration

To celebrate International Human Rights Day, Senator Stewart-Cousins joined the celebration of Yonkers Commission on Human Rights’ 50th Anniversary enacted on October 1, 1963 by the City of Yonkers. The breakfast event was held on Saturday, December 14th at the Riverview on Hastings-on-Hudson with a theme "Advancing Women's Equality" which explored the state of gender equality today and examine possible strategies and steps to promote and realize gender equity in the future. Haitian Resources Center First Annual Gala

Senator Stewart-Cousins recognized the Haitian Resource Center with a proclamation at their First Annual Gala on Friday, December 13th at the Thomas H. Slater Center in White Plains, NY. Just established in March this year, the mission of the Haitian Resource Center is to provide services to the growing and underserved Haitian population in Westchester County" including enrichment programs for children and referrals for immigration and citizenship services among others.

AAMW Domestic Violence Workshop

On Saturday, December 7th, Senator Stewart-Cousins spoke at the African American Men of Westchester's Annual Domestic Violence workshop in White Plains. The Seminar brought about 75 young men from Westchester together to increase awareness about domestic violence, take part in confidence-building exercises and learn how to identify stereotypes of women and men. Senator Stewart-Cousins praised the participants for attending and encouraged them to act as ambassadors to their friends in order to help end the cycle of domestic violence.

Luther V. Garrison Sr. Masonic Foundation Inc. Scholarship Luncheon

On Saturday, November 30th, Senator Stewart-Cousins had the honor of rewarding students entering college the Luther V. Garrison Scholarship at the annual luncheon hosted at the Nepperhan Community Center in Yonkers, NY. The LVG Scholarship program "is designed to assist with students' necessities, and instill the confidence to stay in school". This year's scholarship recipients included Ms. Samatha Brown (pictured above), Councilman Chris Johnson (Father of Chavay Dickerson Scholarship), Mr. Kasaad Mayo, Mr. Donald Lee, Mr. Dennis Richmond. VFW Empire Post #375's Annual Veterans Day Ceremony

Senator Stewart-Cousins thanked the veterans of the VFW Empire Post #375's for their service to our country at their Annual Veterans Day Ceremony on Monday, November 11th in Yonkers, NY. Senator Stewart-Cousins, whose father was a member of the "Buffalo Soldiers" 92nd Infantry Division and fought in Italy during WWII, mentioned in her speech, "Due to my father's and millions of other veterans' unrelenting persistence and selflessness to defend this country, we are able to enjoy days like Veterans' Day."

Seely Place Elementary School "Take A Vet To School Day"

On Wednesday, November 6th, Seely Place Elementary School in Edgemont participated in The History Channel's "Take A Vet To School Day", a national program that encourages communities and schools to invite veterans of all backgrounds to share their stories and receive thanks for their service on or around Veterans Day. At this event, Senator Stewart-Cousins spoke to a group of over 400 elementary school children about her father and brother's WWII and Vietnam War experiences and the importance of honoring veterans because of the vital roles they play in defending our nation.
