The annual Ardsley Day Festival is an event that many residents look forward to as it celebrates the community and showcases what the Village of Ardsley has to offer, bringing together local businesses, community organizations and volunteers to offer a wide variety of FREE attractions and activities for all ages. Senator Stewart-Cousins stopped by various vendor tables with Carolyn Stevens, Executive Director of Scarsdale Chamber of Commerce--this one is the League of Women Voters--at Scardale's FIRST food and wine festival on Sunday, September 22nd. Located at Scarsdale Village, this special event brought the community together through food and wine tasting, presented by local celebrity chefs, restaurants, bakeries and catering companies, while generating awareness and raising funds to fight hunger, obesity and malnutrition.
To continue to show her appreciation and support for the local arts, Senator Stewart-Cousins attended the RiverArts 50th Anniversary Party on September 22nd, a fundraiser to celebrate five decades of artistic inspiration and education throughout the Rivertowns held at the Dobbs Ferry Historical Society.
Senator Stewart-Cousins had the pleasure to kick-off the North Yonkers Boys and Girls Club football and cheering season on Sunday, September 22nd. The North Yonkers Boys and Girls Club is a volunteer organization and works for the prevention of delinquency and youth crime and the advancement of the morale., physical, mental, and social well being of the youth of the City of Yonkers. The club offers basketball, baseball, softball, soccer, Pop Warner football, and cheerleading, for 1,200 youth annually. Sports are offered to children ages 5 through 17. The club also has a teen club for the teens 13 through 19 living in northwest Yonkers.
On Wednesday, September 18th, the Yonkers Partners in Education hosted its 6th Annual Gala at the Cross Shopping Center which celebrated education "in style" and honored the achievements of Yonkers public school students. This annual special event, which helps continue YPIE's mission "to ensure that all children who attend the Yonkers Public Schools have the tools, support and guidance needed to complete a post-secondary program", was attended by over 400 supporters, including Mr. Kevin Lee, Cultural Ambassador of China, Ms.
Senator Stewart-Cousins joined Mayor Mike Spano, NYS HCR Commissioner Darryl Towns, The Community Builders (TCB) and other officials for the groundbreaking ceremony of the Schoolhouse Terrace project. Located at the site of the old School 6, Schoolhouse Terrace is a $63 million joint redevelopment effort by TCB and the Municipal Housing Authority to create two new mixed-income residential buildings affordable to families and seniors. The New York State Mid Hudson Regional Economic Development Council invested $29.6 million in this project in 2011.
Yonkers, NY - Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins (D/I/WF – 35th District) donated blood at a drive she co-hosted with Empire City Casino, Senator George Latimer, Assemblyman Gary Pretlow and Assemblywoman Shelley Mayer on Wednesday afternoon at the Raceway.
Blood donations collected at the drive helped replenish the New York Blood Center which has faced a shortage of blood supply in recent weeks. Participants also received a free mini-medical exam on site which included information about their temperature, blood pressure and hematocrit level.
Every month, the White Plains Council of Neighborhood Associations (WPCNA) hosts a meeting to discuss citywide issues impacting White Plains neighborhoods, giving unaffiliated White Plains residents the opportunity to voice their concerns. On Tuesday, September 10th, WPCNA hosted its September meeting at the Education House which Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins, along with Senator George Latimer, attended as a guest speaker and discussed legislative issues that directly affect White Plains residents.
Senator Stewart-Cousins welcomed new members of the Westchester-Putnam NYSUT New Retiree Luncheon on Thursday, September 12th. The Westchester-Putman NYSUT Retirees is a membership-based organization which serves former employees of the New York State school system, providing a community that allows members to stay connected, and advocating for educational, health and other related issues that concern and affect its members.
ArtsWestchester, the City of White Plains and the White Plains BID hosted Jazzfest 2013, a three-day jazz celebration in downtown White Plains. A strong advocate for the arts, Senator Stewart-Cousins joined local officials and residents on day two of the festival. On Thursday, September 5th, Senator Stewart-Cousins took part in the celebration of the Yonkers Family YMCA's 131st year in service at the Westchester Manor in Hastings, NY, honoring individuals for their involvement in keeping the Y's mission alive, including Pastor James Hassell who received the Faith in Action Award and Sanah Susan Naber who received the Youth Development Award.
The little league season has been over for months, but on September 7th, Senator Stewart-Cousins joined the Elmsford Little League for their annual end-of season awards picnic. The Senator congratulated the players on another great year of baseball and praised the organization for their commitment.

On Wednesday, August 28th, Senator Stewart-Cousins commemorated the 50th Anniversary of the Great March on Washington D.C. outside the Westchester County Courthouse by the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial, recalling Dr. King's famous "I Have a Dream" speech that changed the meaning of equality for all. Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins participated in "Poverty: 50 Years Later" community forum on Wednesday, August 28th at the Riverfront Library in Yonkers, NY. Hosted by Community Voices Heard, the forum was an open discussion about poverty in the area, and what the community can do to end it for good. Community Voices Heard (CVH) is a "member-led multi-racial organization, principally women of color and low-income families in New York State that builds power to secure social, economic and racial justice for all".
On Monday, August 26th, Senator Stewart-Cousins paid a visit to the residents of the Regency Extended Care Center who were very excited to be greeted by their Senator in person. Regency Extende Care Center is a rehabiliation center that provides the "highest quality short and long-term care for people who are elderly, convalescent, handicapped or chronically ill" located in Yonkers, NY.
