Commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the Great March on Washington

On Wednesday, August 28th, Senator Stewart-Cousins commemorated the 50th Anniversary of the Great March on Washington D.C. outside the Westchester County Courthouse by the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial, recalling Dr. King's famous "I Have a Dream" speech that changed the meaning of equality for all. Community Voices Heard Public Forum "Poverty: 50 Years Later"

Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins participated in "Poverty: 50 Years Later" community forum on Wednesday, August 28th at the Riverfront Library in Yonkers, NY. Hosted by Community Voices Heard, the forum was an open discussion about poverty in the area, and what the community can do to end it for good. Community Voices Heard (CVH) is a "member-led multi-racial organization, principally women of color and low-income families in New York State that builds power to secure social, economic and racial justice for all".

Senator Stewart-Cousins' Visit to Regency Extended Care Center

On Monday, August 26th, Senator Stewart-Cousins paid a visit to the residents of the Regency Extended Care Center who were very excited to be greeted by their Senator in person. Regency Extende Care Center is a rehabiliation center that provides the "highest quality short and long-term care for people who are elderly, convalescent, handicapped or chronically ill" located in Yonkers, NY.

Senator Stewart-Cousins' Visit to Ludington Adult Day Services

Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins visited the Sound Shore Medical Center on Wednesday, August 14th to receive a skirt made especially for her by Mr. Edrick Forde, a former tailor who will be celebrating his 106th birthday on September 11th. In a quote after the visit, Senator Stewart-Cousins commented, “I am incredibly thankful to Mr. Forde for the beautiful skirt. He is still as talented a tailor as he ever was, and I am so thrilled to know him. Adult day services, like those offered to Mr. Forde by Ludington Adult Day Services, are critically important because they provide senior citizens with opportunities to stay active and engaged in any number of activities.

Westchester County Annual Heritage of India Festival

Senator Stewart-Cousins attended the Annual Heritage of India Festival on Sunday, August 4th at Kensico Dam Plaza in Valhalla, NY. Sponsored by Westchester County Parks, the Indian American Cultural Association of Westchester, Nielsen, Dr. Anil and Anju Joshi, and Friends of Westchester County Parks, the Annual Heritage of India Festival ends the Westchester County's annual series of cultural heritage celebration with "exotic sights, sounds and flavors of distant India", featuring delicious foods of India, live music, folk dancing and cultural performances, and a fashion show showcasing colorful native clothing.

Senator Stewart-Cousins spoke to the Coalition for Scarsdale Schools (CSS) last night at a celebration of the passage of the 2013 Scarsdale School District budget, congratulating the CSS for their hard work and advocacy on behalf of Scarsdale's schools, and reaffirming her commitment to fight for public education as their partner in Albany. The party was held at the home of Diane and Mark Greenwald.

Senator Stewart-Cousins Volunteering at the JCY Summer Reading Buddies Program

A longtime proponent of education and former teacher, Senator Stewart-Cousins volunteered her time at the JCY Summer Reading Buddies Program at the Riverfront Library. The Senator, a former teacher and longtime proponent of education, joined a local Yonkers third grader to read "The Talking Egg," although the young student did most of the reading. The JCY Summer Reading Buddies program pairs volunteers with children to work on their assigned summer reading projects. The program also offers life skills workshops for parents of participating students.

TCC-Westchester Ramadan Dinner

Leader Stewart-Cousins attended the Interfaith Ramadan Dinner hosted by the Turkish Cultural Center (TCC) of Westchester on Thursday, July 25th at the DoubleTree Hotel in Tarrytown, NY. The Dinner featured LIVE! Sufi music accompanied by the Whirling Dervish dance performance. TCC-Westchester is a non-profit organization "dedicated to promoting harmony in diverse cultural setting in the U.S."

Theodore D. Young Summer Jazz Series

Senator Stewart-Cousins showed her support for the arts by attending the Theodor D. Young Summer Jazz Series, a FREE event in Greenburgh, NY which occurs every Thursday from 7:00PM-9:30PM. The Theodore D. Young Community Center, Department of Community Resources seeks to improve the quality of life for Greenburgh residents by providing a variety of educational, cultural, recreational, and social activities and services. The original mission of the Center set forth 30 years ago continues today with the goal of lessening problems caused by poverty, racism, and cultural deprivation.

Blessing of the Yonkers Paddling & Rowing Club New Fleet & Dock

On Tuesday, July 23rd, Senator Stewart-Cousins stopped by the Yonkers Paddling & Rowing Club to participate in the blessing of the new fleet and dock damaged by Superstorm Sandy and recently rebuilt. The Yonkers Paddling & Rowing Club, the successor of the Yonkers Canoe Club founded in 1886, is a non-profit membership organization with a mission to "encourage the growth of, and participation in, rowing and paddling sports".

Honoring Reverend Dr. Lester Cousin with Street Name in White Plains

Senator Stewart-Cousins attended a street naming ceremony and reception in honor of Rev. Dr. Lester Cousin, the former Pastor of Calvary Baptist Church. The City of White Plains designated the corner of Orawaupum Street and Post Road as Reverend Dr. Lester Cousin Way. Rev. Cousin and Senator Stewart-Cousins are not related, although they call each other "cousins". The Reverend retired as Pastor of Calvary Baptist Church in 2011 after serving for 38 years.

Sunshine Pharmacy Opens in White Plains

At a ribbon cutting celebration for the grand opening of Sunshine Pharmacy in White Plains, Senator Stewart-Cousins presented a proclamation to proud owner Pravin Patel. The new pharmacy, formerly known as White Plains Pharmacy, will serve the downtown community.

Yonkers Town Hall Meeting a Success!

In conjunction with Assemblywoman Shelley Mayer, Senator Stewart-Cousins hosted a Town Hall Meeting on Thursday, July 11th at the Yonkers Riverfront Library with members of the community. Assemblyman Gary Pretlow also took part in the Town Hall Meeting. With about 30 people in attendance, mostly from Yonkers, the Senator discussed a wide range of topics including her efforts to create jobs, support education and curb gun violence in the community. The Senator and Assemblypeople then responded to questions from attendees.
