Patch: Save Our Trees: Locals Speak Out Against Clearcutting

Amy Kupfberg, a Hartsdale resident, stood before about forty concerned citizens and a hearing officer for New York's Public Service Commission Tuesday and said: "My mantra used to be 'I love shoes.' But now everything I do is about saving trees."

Residents from around Westchester converged in the Greenburgh Public Library to take the state Public Service Commission to task regarding its current regulations for the clearing of trees near power transmission lines…

"The PSC must use the hammer at its disposal to regulate the utility company's actions," State Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins said. "Lawmakers will be able to forgo legislation and fines if you would just regulate."

LEGISLATION TO ELIMINATE INACTIVE PUBLIC AUTHORITIES

Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins announced that she has introduced legislation (S8165A) to eliminate 118 public authorities and agencies that are no longer active. The 118 authorities, located across New York State, include defunct industrial development agencies, community development agencies, urban renewal agencies and various other public authorities.

“This legislation reduces the size of government, eliminating more than 15% of the public authorities in the State of New York. This is an important step in curbing excessive spending and hiring practices of public authorities and agencies. They operate as autonomous organizations without accountability, and create a huge financial burden on taxpayers,” said Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins (35th District – D/WF).
