Assembly to Pass Bill Giving Tuition Aid to Immigrants (Source:

Albany, NY - The State Assembly proposed legislation Tuesday that would allow undocumented immigrants access to financial aid for higher education, but Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Senate Republicans signaled that the legislation does not have a bright future.

Under the state-level DREAM Act, immigrants who are not citizens would have access to the state Tuition Assistance Program and other aid. The bill would also create a private scholarship fund for immigrants. The Democratic-led Assembly was set to pass the bill late Tuesday.

Statement from Senate Democratic Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins on the Assembly’s Passage of the NYS Dream Act

“I congratulate the Assembly for passing the comprehensive New York State Dream Act. It is now time for the Senate to follow their lead and pass this bill immediately.

“New York’s immigrant population has always been critical to our social, economic, and cultural fabric. Students of good character who, through no fault of their own have resided here for years, deserve an opportunity to achieve and contribute to the American dream. To cut their educational opportunities off deprives us all.”
