Senate Bill Guaranteeing Protections for Tenants of Foreclosed Buildings Signed into Law

Prior Law Allowed Tenants to be Forced from Homes without Notice

Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins (35th District – D/WF) announced that a new law guaranteeing greater protections (S7139) for tenants of buildings in foreclosure has been signed into law. Under the new law, rent-regulated tenants are now required to receive a notice of their housing rights, along with a notice of the building owner’s foreclosure. The bill takes effect 30 days from the date of signing.

A review of the state’s prior notification requirement for renters revealed that existing law failed to effectively communicate to rent-controlled and rent-stabilized tenants that their housing rights are unaffected by a foreclosure proceeding.

CHILDREN’S HEALTH BILL SIGNED INTO LAW

(Albany, NY) Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins (35th District - D/WF) announced that the Child Health Plus and School Meals Enrollment Coordination Act (S4057B) has been signed into law by Governor David Paterson. This legislation, introduced by Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins will assist the approximately 220,000 children in New York State who are currently uninsured, but are eligible for Medicaid or Child Health Plus. Since the majority of children who are not participating in Child Health Plus are attending school and qualify for the Free and Reduced Price School Meals Program, this law coordinates the sharing of information to better serve our State's children.

Keynote Address at Greyston Workforce Development Graduation Ceremony

Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins delivered the keynote address at the Greyston Foundation’s Workforce Development Program (WD 2.0) Graduation ceremony, held in the Yonkers Public Library Riverfront Branch. Immediately preceding the ceremony, employers from throughout Westchester County met with graduates to assess employment possibilities.

On Friday, May 17, 2013, the Child Care Council of Westchester held its annual awards event at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in White Plains to recognize exceptional individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the child care industry in Westchester County. Over 250 people attended the Awards Breakfast. Recognizing those community individuals who have significantly supported early care and education in Westchester, the Council presented its 2013 CHAMPIONS OF CHILD CARE AWARDS to NYS Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins, The Editorial Board of The Journal News and The Dannon Company.
