Senator Stewart-Cousins Remarks on Resolution Honoring Fire Chief Chris DePaoli For His Act of Bravery

(Albany - May 28th) “It’s not all of us who aspire to be heroes. It’s not all of us who devote as much time and attention to the little and big things in the communities we live in.” This quote by Democratic Conference Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins concluded her address to the Senate chamber commending Irvington Fire Chief Chris DePaoli who has proven through his actions to be a great hero in his community. DePaoli, who is also a 30 year employee of the Irvington Parks Department, displayed a tremendous amount of courage when he spotted a man attacking a woman with a knife and did what he instinctively knew best as a first responder; he jumped out of his car, took his daughters baseball bat and stopped what would have been an otherwise fatal assault.

This Memorial Day Weekend

"Memorial Day is an opportunity for all of us to pause and reflect on the loss of the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving our country in the Armed Forces. We honor them for their courage and commitment to protect us. We grieve with New York families who have lost a loved one in the military.

New York was the first state to recognize the holiday in 1873. Memorial Day was originally known as Decoration Day, a name taken from the act of decorating the graves of fallen soldiers. Its history dates back to 1865 and Charleston, South Carolina, where former black slaves dug up a mass grave of Union soldiers in a Confederate prison camp in order to give them a proper burial and to honor them for fighting so that they became freedmen.
