Press Release: Democratic Conference Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins Announces Increased CHIPS Funding

Albany, NY - Democratic Conference Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins (D/I/WF – 35th District) announced today that the 2014-15 NYS Budget included a $40 million increase in CHIPS funding to help local governments pay for road repairs caused by the extreme winter weather. The additional funding increased this year’s CHIPS spending to $438 million Statewide.

The County of Westchester will be receiving $2,817,055.24 in CHIPS funding, an increase of $91,199.37 over the previous year. Municipalities in the 35th Senate District will receive a total of $5.5 million in CHIPS funding an increase of receive $487,000 over last year.

In the News: Women's Groups: Let Cities and Counties Increase Minimum Wage (Source: LoHud.com)

Women’s rights advocates and legislators released a letter Monday urging Gov. Andrew Cuomo to support a bill that would allow cities and counties to increase their own minimum wage.

“Failing to adequately raise the minimum wage has hampered our state’s economic growth and kept over 1.1 million hard-working New Yorkers in poverty,” State Democratic Conference Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins, D-Yonkers, said in a statement. “A majority of minimum wage earners are women, many of whom are desperately trying to provide for their families and make ends meet.”

April 7th is World Health day, an opportunity for all New Yorkers to improve public health through awareness and discussion. This year’s World Health Day priority health concern is vector-borne diseases, those carried by living organisms such as ticks, mosquitoes, sand flies, and others, passed to humans through blood or prolonged contact. Lyme disease, West Nile fever, and hemorrhagic fever are just a few to be on the watch for in New York State.

The final state budget will include $17 million dollars for the Yonkers Public Schools, an increase of 7.67% over last year’s amount.
