In the News: New York Democrats Push Fair Pay For Contract Public Employees (Source: Daily News)

In the wake of the Daily News Fight for Fair Pay Campaign, state Senate Democrats on Tuesday called on seven state public authorities to immediately hike contract workers’ pay to at least $9 an hour. 

The MTA and the Thruway Authority were among the seven agencies that received the letters from Senate Democratic leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins.

White Plains Historical Society Celebration of George Washington's Birthday

On February 23rd, Senator Stewart-Cousins and other local elected officials joined the White Plains Historical Society at the Jacob Purdy House to celebrate the birthday of America's Founder, George Washington. The event program included a flag raising ceremony and a lecture by historian Barnet Schecter titled "Revolutionary War Battles in NY Through George Washington's Maps". The coverlet containing pictures of historic White Plains houses and buildings, which the Senator happily purchased to support the organization, can be purchased at the WPHS online gift shop.

Food Bank For Westchester Food Giveaway

Senator Stewart-Cousins regularly collaborates with the Food Bank For Westchester to make sure that the underprivileged living in her district don't go hungry. On Saturday, February 22nd, Senator Stewart-Cousins, along with Ground Works and members of the AME Zion Church, put the Food Bank For Westchester's mobile food pantry to use and gave away food to 100+ needy individuals and families living in Yonkers.

"Building A Leadership Pipeline For Women" Discussion Panel

Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins, along with Assemblywomen Robinson and Titus, hosted a discussion panel during Caucus weekend in Albany about roles of women in society, and how women helping women can make a bigger impact in the workforce. The panel also discussed some of the hardships of being a woman in the professional world and the choices that professional women have to make about family and career. Panel participants included Jackie Williams (State & Broadway), Jennifer Jones Austin (FPWA), Leecia Eve (Verizon), Mylan L. Denerstein (Counsel to the Governor), Carolyn McLaughlin (Albany City Council), and Mecca Santana (Chief Diversity Officer of the State of New York).

New Law Allow School Districts To Create Property Tax Exemption For Veterans

In June of 2013, Senator Stewart-Cousins proudly voted for legislation that authorizes school districts to grant property tax exemptions to veterans who live within their jurisdictions. The bill passed both houses of the Legislature unanimously and was signed into law by Governor Cuomo on December 18th.

Let Cities, Counties Supplement State's Minimum Wage (Commentary on Times Union by Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins and Assemblyman Karim Camara)

As a nation, we've long agreed that everyone who's willing to work hard should have a shot at moving up in the world. But as families today know all too well, the middle class feels awfully elusive when you earn $8 an hour.

That's why we're supporting legislation that would allow municipalities in New York to supplement the state's minimum wage to be more in line with regional living costs. We recognize that New York is a diverse state, and a nuanced, local approach makes more sense than a one-size-fits-all policy. After all, a decent wage in Binghamton isn't necessarily the same for Buffalo or Albany County.
