Family Planning Advocates of NYS Day of Action Rally

At the Family Planning Advocates of NYS Annual Day of Action rally, Democratic Conference Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins got the advocates on their feet and cheering for the Women's Equality Act. Known statewide as a champion for women's equality, Leader Stewart-Cousins vowed at the rally to continue fighting for passage of all ten points of the Women's Equality Act, including reproductive health.

American Red Cross Winter Storm Tips & Checklists

With another large winter storm approaching our area, the American Red Cross is prepared to respond, as needed, to storm-related emergencies.

As with any disaster, preparation can be the difference between life and death. The Red Cross is urging residents to be prepared—not only for the snow, but for extreme cold and possible power outages. Additionally, extreme weather increases the risk of home fires. Below are some tips to help residents stay safe, as well as checklists on winter storm safety and power outage safety. 

COLD WEATHER/WINTER STORM: Temperatures are expected to drop as conditions deteriorate throughout our region. People should take the following steps:

Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins Memorializing Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s Tremendous Contribution To Civil Rights

Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins memorialized the life and achievements of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with a resolution, commenting on how much he had accomplished in his brief life of 39 years. In Senator Stewart-Cousins remarks, she stressed that Dr. King's belief in nonviolence changed the world, and how it is still relevant today, reminding us that he died speaking for jobs and freedom, and argued that Dr. King would be working for those who work hard and still don't have sufficient opportunities if he was alive today. Senator Stewart-Cousins concluded her remarks by reminding the chamber of all the work that still needed to be accomplished for those people, and for Dr.

“It is clear from today’s Senate hearing that there are serious concerns about the Common Core curriculum, which is why I have been calling for a moratorium on the consequences for Common Core. There is overwhelming evidence that we are moving at too fast a pace and not giving our teachers and students proper training in these new principles. While the goals of Common Core are commendable and the methods to implement those goals are innovative, the fact remains that this new curriculum is untested and not performing adequately.

Nepperhan Community Center 28th Annual MLK Breakfast

On Monday, January 20th, Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins attended the Nepperhan Community Center's 28th Annual MLK Breakfast in Yonkers, NY to begin her all-day commemoration of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. At the Breakfast, the Senator took part in the discussion of the late Rev. Dr. King's dream, and how it is still alive 50 years later. Also at the Breakfast were Mayor Mike Spano and Rev. Dr. W. Franklyn Richardson, Keynote Speaker, and honoring Andrea Clark Brown, Board of Directors President of the Nepperhan Community Center.

This Monday, January 20th 2014, is Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, an excellent opportunity for Americans to honor Dr. King’s legacy through service. The MLK Day of Service empowers individuals, strengthens communities, bridges barriers, creates solutions to social problems, and moves us closer to Dr. King’s vision of a harmonious society.

Hudson River Greenway Link Project Study Complete, Next Steps Pursued

On January 17th, Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins attended a press conference to show her support for the Hudson River Greenway Link Project. At the press conference, U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer announced the completion of the Project study, and the next steps he plans to take in pursuit of the development of the “bicycle and pedestrian-friendly” pathway along the Hudson River which would connect the Manhattan Waterfront Greenway with the Old Croton Aqueduct in Yonkers. The goal of the pathway is to create “a continuous greenway for cyclists, pedestrians and commuters while “transforming Westchester waterfront, boosting recreation, and bringing more economic activity in the region”.

On the Senate Floor, Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins spoke to mourn the passing of former South African President Nelson Mandela. The Senator praised Mandela's commitment to nothing less than the complete emancipation of his people, and reminded the chamber that he refused to exit prison for 27 years until this dream was realized. The Senator concluded her remarks by encouraging her colleagues to abide by the same courage and ideals of equality that Nelson Mandela cherished.

Senate Democratic Conference Introduces Bill To Move State Primary Election Date To June

Albany, NY - The Senate Democratic Conference today announced the introduction of legislation to hold the state’s Primary Election day for state and federal offices in June. This billwould save state and local governments $50 million by holding a single primary election andmoving Primary Election day from the month of September.

“This is a common sense and good government approach to save our local taxpayers at least $50million and will help increase voter turnout, giving more people a voice in the electoral process ,” Senate Democratic Conference Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins said.
