Elmsford, NY - Democratic Conference Leader, Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins, announced today completion of the $21.7 million NY Works Project to replace the north and southbound bridges carrying the Sprain Brook Parkway over Route 119 in the village of Elmsford.
“Motorists in my district can now enjoy a smoother, safer ride over the Sprain Brook Parkway in Elmsford,” said Senator Stewart-Cousins. “The completion of this NY Works project is part of our commitment to invest in infrastructure for the future of our state. Another plus is that in order to do so, some 500 people were employed, providing a boost to the local economy.”
New Rochelle, NY - State Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins, the Democratic Conference Leader, announced today during a news conference at the New Rochelle Day Nursery School that she was able to cut through legislative red tape to deliver a $12,000 state grant awarded in the 2011-12 Budget year for a new boiler. Senator Stewart-Cousins learned about the problem during her office’s mobile constituent hours in New Rochelle in April.
(Yonkers - October 30th) Democratic Conference Leader, State Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins welcomed suppliers to a Minority and Women-Owned Businesses event for Kawasaki Rail Car Inc in Yonkers. Kawasaki is a major employer in her district, and is manufacturing rail and subway cars for the MTA's Metro-North and Long Island Railroad. The Senator explained why it is so important to increase the level of MWBE participation in competitive state contracts, like this one. The state has now raised the bar for MWBE participation from 20% to 30%, and she encouraged contractors to learn about the opportunities that are being made available.
The MTA and Kawasaki cordially invite the MWBE community to meet with Kawasaki and their major subcontractors in an effort to achieve MBE & WBE Compliance to manufacture M-9 Railcars through an LIRR/MNR joint procurement. Kawasaki and their major subcontractors will be available to provide an overview of the M-9 Railcar Project and potential subcontracting opportunities through a series of panel discussions, networking opportunities, and Railcar and Components Tour at the Kawasaki Yonkers Plant.
(New Rochelle - October 21st) Senator Stewart-Cousins toured the New Rochelle Library with Director Tom Geoffino, Assembly Member Steve Otis and Library Board of Trustees President Haina Just-Michael. She learned about the updates to the facility thanks to funding she voted to approve for state Library Construction Grants. New Rochelle Library received nearly $77,000 for the downtown and Huguenot Children's Library locations combined.
(Dobbs Ferry - October 21st) Senator Stewart-Cousins recognized the good work and care the staff at the Ashikari Breast Center in Dobbs Ferry provides to patients as part of St. John's Riverside Hospital. This facility bears the name of Dr. Roy Ashikari who still practices there 26 years after it was first established. Countless numbers of lives have been saved in the last 26 years and they continue to do so today. Dr. Ashikari's son Andrea, also a doctor at the center, was there to receive a Senate Proclamation today in his father's absence, and was joined by Dr. Melita Charles and a physician's assistant who works at the Ashikari Breast Center.
Yonkers, NY - Members of the Yonkers State Delegation, which includes Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins, the Democratic Conference Leader, Senator George Latimer, Assembly Members Shelley Mayer and Gary Pretlow, were joined by Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano, to announce $285,000 combined funding from state and federal resources toward creation of a new state-of-the-art technology center at the Yonkers Public Library Riverfront Branch.
(Westchester - October 19th) October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, and Senator Stewart-Cousins was at the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk in Westchester. Besides friends, neighbors and constituents, the Senator also ran into NYSUT President Karen Magee, Congresswoman Nita Lowey and Lt. Governor Candidate Kathy Hochul.
(White Plains - October 17th) Senator Stewart-Cousins had a great visit to the White Plains Public Library with Assembly Member David Buchwald, Librarian Brian Kenney and Foundation Executive Director Libby Hollahan who showed them the improvements. The most fascinating part to the Senator was to see a 3D printer in action, and a drum set available for use - a real creative outlet far beyond the books and computers we've come to know at our libraries. This was a result of the $67,469 the Legislature approved.
(White Plains - October 18th) Senator Stewart-Cousins spoke at the National Association of University Women 64th Annual Northeast Sectional Conference Awards Banquet about her rise to become the first African-American woman to preside over the New York State Senate. The NUAW is a community based women’s organization founded in Washington, DC in 1910. The mission of NAUW is to serve women, youth, and the disadvantaged in our communities and in developing countries by strategically partnering with allied organizations to address educational issues and advance the status of women’s issues. NAUW’s national focus targets: 1) Education, 2) Literacy, 3) Scholarship and 4) National & International Affairs.
Yonkers, NY - Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins, the Democratic Conference Leader, and Assembly Member Shelley Mayer toured expanded pre-kindergarten classrooms at Sacred Heart School in Yonkers today, made possible through the state’s Universal Pre-K Funding Program that they voted for in the 2014 State Budget. Sacred Heart has been able to add 120 pre-kindergarten slots and 100 other seats were added at two other Catholic Schools also located in Yonkers, as part of the $2.2 million state education grant awarded to the Catholic School Region of Central Westchester.
State Senator Stewart-Cousins received an 88 on the Environmental Scorecard this year, the highest score of any legislative leader in the New York State Senate. Each year, EPL/Environmental Advocates tracks the voting records of state legislators, assigning points to how they vote or take action on specific environmental legislation.

(Tarrytown - October 11th) Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins addressed the 78th Annual NYS NAACP Conference and spoke of the organization's history of fighting against racial discrimination and for equal rights, a struggle that continues today 50 years after the Civil Rights Act became law in this country. (Dobbs Ferry - October 11th) Sister to Sister International held their 20th Anniversary Power Luncheon on October 11th at Mercy College in Dobbs Ferry. Senator Stewart-Cousins, along with Assemblymember Gary Pretlow, attended with proclamations and citations for the honorees: Dionne Polite of AARP,Naomi Johnson of State Farm, and Stacie NC Grant of C & G Enterprises. (White Plains - October 8th) The Heart Gallery opened in White Plains at the public library to promote foster care opportunities in Westchester County. Senator Stewart-Cousins and Assembly Member David Buchwald joined Westchester County Social Services Commissioner Kevin McGuire and Braveheart members including Darryl McDaniels of the rap group Run DMC, who was adopted.
