Press Release: Senate Democratic Conference Announces Action On Minimum Wage

Albany, NY - The Senate Democratic Conference on February 4th announced the introduction of three bills relating to the New York State minimum wage. These three pieces of legislation would enable local governments to raise the minimum wage in their localities, expedite the increase of the state’s minimum wage, and end the corporate tax credit for employers who pay workers the minimum wage.

Popeyes/Burger King Restaurant Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

On Friday, January 31st, a joint Popeyes-Burger King restaurant opened up across from Yonkers City Hall in the heart of downtown Yonkers. The franchise hired a staff of 70+ people and is in a prime location for what was a long-time a defunct eyesore of a closed diner. At this ribbon cutting ceremony, Senator Stewart-Cousins talked about the importance of stimulating the local economy, and how the opening of this restaurant will do just that to the Yonkers community.

American Red Cross Winter Storm Tips & Checklists

With another large winter storm approaching our area, the American Red Cross is prepared to respond, as needed, to storm-related emergencies.

As with any disaster, preparation can be the difference between life and death. The Red Cross is urging residents to be prepared—not only for the snow, but for extreme cold and possible power outages. Additionally, extreme weather increases the risk of home fires. Below are some tips to help residents stay safe, as well as checklists on winter storm safety and power outage safety.

Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins memorialized the life and achievements of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with a resolution, commenting on how much he had accomplished in his brief life of 39 years. In Senator Stewart-Cousins remarks, she stressed that Dr. King's belief in nonviolence changed the world, and how it is still relevant today, reminding us that he died speaking for jobs and freedom, and argued that Dr. King would be working for those who work hard and still don't have sufficient opportunities if he was alive today. Nepperhan Community Center 28th Annual MLK Breakfast

On Monday, January 20th, Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins attended the Nepperhan Community Center's 28th Annual MLK Breakfast in Yonkers, NY to begin her all-day commemoration of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. At the Breakfast, the Senator took part in the discussion of the late Rev. Dr. King's dream, and how it is still alive 50 years later. Also at the Breakfast were Mayor Mike Spano and Rev. Dr. W. Franklyn Richardson, Keynote Speaker, and honoring Andrea Clark Brown, Board of Directors President of the Nepperhan Community Center.

Hudson River Greenway Link Project Study Complete, Next Steps Pursued

On January 17th, Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins attended a press conference to show her support for the Hudson River Greenway Link Project. At the press conference, U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer announced the completion of the Project study, and the next steps he plans to take in pursuit of the development of the “bicycle and pedestrian-friendly” pathway along the Hudson River which would connect the Manhattan Waterfront Greenway with the Old Croton Aqueduct in Yonkers. The goal of the pathway is to create “a continuous greenway for cyclists, pedestrians and commuters while “transforming Westchester waterfront, boosting recreation, and bringing more economic activity in the region”.

Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins Mourning the Death of Nelson Mandela

On the Senate Floor, Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins spoke to mourn the passing of former South African President Nelson Mandela. The Senator praised Mandela's commitment to nothing less than the complete emancipation of his people, and reminded the chamber that he refused to exit prison for 27 years until this dream was realized. The Senator concluded her remarks by encouraging her colleagues to abide by the same courage and ideals of equality that Nelson Mandela cherished.
