On Thursday, September 5th, Senator Stewart-Cousins took part in the celebration of the Yonkers Family YMCA's 131st year in service at the Westchester Manor in Hastings, NY, honoring individuals for their involvement in keeping the Y's mission alive, including Pastor James Hassell who received the Faith in Action Award and Sanah Susan Naber who received the Youth Development Award.
The little league season has been over for months, but on September 7th, Senator Stewart-Cousins joined the Elmsford Little League for their annual end-of season awards picnic. The Senator congratulated the players on another great year of baseball and praised the organization for their commitment.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial, recalling Dr. King's famous "I Have a Dream" speech that changed the meaning of equality for all. Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins participated in "Poverty: 50 Years Later" community forum on Wednesday, August 28th at the Riverfront Library in Yonkers, NY. Hosted by Community Voices Heard, the forum was an open discussion about poverty in the area, and what the community can do to end it for good. Community Voices Heard (CVH) is a "member-led multi-racial organization, principally women of color and low-income families in New York State that builds power to secure social, economic and racial justice for all".
Yonkers, NY - State Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins (D/I/WF – 35th District) announced today that starting August 19th through the end of December, registration to receive the Basic STAR exemption will be open. All resident homeowners who wish to receive the exemption for 2014 and subsequent years must register with the New York State Tax Department as required by new legislation passed this year to eliminate fraud and duplication.

“Today is Women’s Equality Day when we commemorate the historic passage of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution granting women the right to vote. We have made great strides in achieving full equality for women here in New York but we still have much more work to do. I commend the Governor for his Women's Equality Act legislation. It is unfortunate that the Senate was unable to pass the entire 10-point Act.
Attention homeowners! If you are one of the millions of New Yorkers receiving the Basic STAR exemption, you must re-register with the Department of Taxation and Finance in order to receive the exemption in 2014. This is part of a new law, passed by the Legislature this year, to protect taxpayers against fraudulent or inappropriate STAR exemptions. Registration has already begun and will continue through the end of December.

Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins visited the Sound Shore Medical Center on Wednesday, August 14th to receive a skirt made especially for her by Mr. Edrick Forde, a former tailor who will be celebrating his 106th birthday on September 11th. In a quote after the visit, Senator Stewart-Cousins commented, “I am incredibly thankful to Mr. Forde for the beautiful skirt. He is still as talented a tailor as he ever was, and I am so thrilled to know him. Adult day services, like those offered to Mr. Forde by Ludington Adult Day Services, are critically important because they provide senior citizens with opportunities to stay active and engaged in any number of activities.
