Letter to Public Service Commission About Tree Trimming Policies

Thank you for this opportunity to comment on the Public Service Commission (PSC) Staff’s Recommendations regarding Case 10-E-0155. I would also like to thank you for opening this review, and for affording the public a high level of involvement in the process. As stated in my original comments, I recognize that vegetation management practices are necessary to maintain a safe and reliable electric utility system. However, changes to Public Service Commission policies for utility companies engaging in this work are necessary to improve public involvement and reflect greater concern for the environment and quality of life. To that end, it is my belief that the PSC staff’s recommendations do not go far enough in addressing the concerns of affected residents.

YONKERS — Biblical lepers were examples of self-liberation at the Nepperhan Community Center's annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day event on Monday.

The Rev. H. Beecher Hicks Jr. of the Metropolitan Baptist Church in Washington urged about 300 attendees at the Warburton Avenue center's 25th annual breakfast to let go of the hurt from past injustices and reach for any goal they desire...

The Nepperhan event, which drew most of the city's elected officials, also honored state Sen. Andrea Stewart-Cousins; Assemblyman J. Gary Pretlow: Ken Jenkins, chairman of the Westchester County Board of Legislators ; and Yonkers Councilwoman Patricia McDow with the Drum Major for Justice Award for their efforts to improve the city...

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Breakfast with the Drum Major for Justice Award. The Senator joined Assemblyman J. Gary Pretlow, Westchester County Board Chairman Ken Jenkins, and Yonkers City Councilwoman Pat McDow as honorees at the annual celebration of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day at the Community Center.

Senator Stewart-Cousins Appointed to Gov. Cuomo’s Mandate Relief Redesign Team

(Westchester, NY) –  Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins was appointed to Governor Andrew Cuomo’s Mandate Relief Redesign Team, joining a group of twenty three business, government, education and labor leaders from across the State of New York. The Commission, created by Executive Order and announced in Governor Cuomo’s State of the State Address last Wednesday, will explore the numerous unfunded or underfunded state mandates on local governments and school districts and determine which are ineffective, wasteful or outdated. The initial recommendations of the Mandate Relief Redesign Team are due to the Governor by March 1st, 2011, but the Team will continue its review until the end of Fiscal Year 2011- 2012 .

Reform Albany Press Conference in NYC

On Monday, December 20th Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins, former Mayor Ed Koch and fellow Senate Democrats called on Republican State Senators to pass a package of reform bills as the first act of business in the New Year. The bills include ethics reform, budget reform, and establishing an independent redistricting commission—reform measures that were a part of former Mayor Ed Koch’s “New York Uprising” reform pledge that was signed by 53 of 62 incoming New York State Senators before the election.

Wage Theft Prevention Act Signed Into Law

Today, Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins announced Wage Theft Prevention Act (S8380), legislation she co-sponsored in the Senate, has been signed into law by Governor David A. Paterson. This new law will effectively expand workplace rights of employees by requiring employers not only to provide employees with necessary wage information, but put in place sanctions for employers who fail to properly pay their workers full earned wages and overtime.

Keynote Address at Greyston Workforce Development Graduation Ceremony

Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins delivered the keynote address at the Greyston Foundation’s Workforce Development Program (WD 2.0) Graduation ceremony, held in the Yonkers Public Library Riverfront Branch. Immediately preceding the ceremony, employers from throughout Westchester County met with graduates to assess employment possibilities.

Lt. Col. Joseph T. Nader

Joseph T. Nader,  retired Lt. Col and retired Lt. YPD, also a Yonkers native, served in North Africa and Italy during WWII and at Ft. Gordon during the Korean War. As an US Army reservist, he attained the rank of Lt. Colonel. Joe was appointed to the Yonkers Police Dept. in 1946 and was Chairman of the Police and Fire Retirees for 8 years. He was also Past Commander of Post 1666 VFW and Chairman of the Central Committee of War Veterans. Joe was instrumental in establishing Montrose Veterans Nursing Home, Veterans Service Agency in Yonkers and the Gold Star Mother’s Monument in Larkin Plaza. He was a recipient of Westchester County Veteran of the Year  and NY Veterans Hall of Fame.

WORLD AIDS DAY: LEARN ABOUT HIV/AIDS AND GET TESTED

On Decemeber 1st , countries across the globe will celebrate World AIDS Day, honoring those who have fallen to HIV/AIDS, and in doing so use the day to increase awareness of the rising infection rates and what can be done to stop this trend. In recognition of World AIDS Day, Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins is urging people to increase their own awareness of HIV/AIDS and also get themselves tested.

(Albany, NY) Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins (35th District - D/WF) announced that the Child Health Plus and School Meals Enrollment Coordination Act (S4057B) has been signed into law by Governor David Paterson. This legislation, introduced by Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins will assist the approximately 220,000 children in New York State who are currently uninsured, but are eligible for Medicaid or Child Health Plus.  Since the majority of children who are not participating in Child Health Plus are attending school and qualify for the Free and Reduced Price School Meals Program, this law coordinates the sharing of information to better serve our State's children.
