(Albany - March 31st) Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins addressed her colleagues in regards to the Education Budget Bill. She prefaced her remarks by mentioning that she is a product of public school education, her children went to public school, her grandchildren went to public school and she had the opportunity to teach in public school. As one of the leading advocates for children and education in New York State, the Senator criticized the bill for the expeditious implementation of the common core and the lasting effects it could have on students and their teachers. She reflected on all the different areas of her district and the way they banded together over the rush to place the common core in schools.

Senate Democratic Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins Delivers Final Remarks Before Senate Passes 2015-16 State Budget

(Albany - March 31st) “What happened in this budget, and the story of this budget, is more of a story of who was included, who was left out, and its also more of a story of what didn't happen as opposed to what did. We failed to raise the minimum wage that would've lifted thousands of New Yorkers out of poverty. We failed to provide desperately needed property tax relief for homeowners and business owners across New York State. Yet, we gave tax breaks to yacht owners and airplane owners. We failed to deliver relief for renters and provide adequate funding for affordable housing.

Statement From Senate Democratic Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins on Minimum Wage

“As more and more items are being removed from this year’s State Budget, I am especially concerned that efforts to increase the minimum wage seemed to have stalled. Statement From Senate Democratic Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins On Assembly Passage Of Women’s Reproductive Health Legislation

“I congratulate Speaker Heastie and the State Assembly for passing common sense legislation that will protect women’s rights. It is deeply disappointing that the Senate Republicans continue to stand against efforts to simply codify the Roe v. Wade decision into New York State law. Unfortunately, my Senate Republican colleagues have taken a step backwards. In 1970, when the issue of reproductive health was first passed in New York, 12 Republican Senators joined a majority of their Democratic colleagues to support this landmark legislation. Today, apparently not one Republican Senator will stand up for full equality for women.”

Statement From Senate Democratic Conference Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins On Education

“As discussions regarding a commission to reform New York’s education system continue and details begin to emerge, it is becoming clear that this potential commission is unworkable. Any commission created to review and amend our education system must be balanced and include representation from all stakeholders, not simply a select few. The priorities of this commission should be to improve the quality of education our students receive, and not simply continue the demonization of teachers.”
