Democratic Conference Leader Stewart-Cousins "Raise Up NY" Press Conference

On Wednesday, April 30th, Democratic Conference Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins spoke at the Raise Up NY press conference in support of her bill that would allow municipalities to raise the minimum wage and why this is important for the women of New York State. Organizations including Make the Road New York, the Labor Religion Coalition, and Citizen Action of New York were present and raising their voices for a living wage. Leader Stewart-Cousins described the current regimented increases as inadequate and slow and brought up the troubling statistics which show women to be the majority low-wage earners both in the United States and in New York.

Senator Stewart-Cousins Remarks on Shaken Baby Syndrome Resolution

"Shaken Baby Syndrome (SBS) is something that is preventable through education and public awareness," said Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins as she recognizes the week of April 20th-April 26th as Shaken Baby Syndrome Awareness week with a resolution, telling the story of Cynthia Gibbs who at 8-months old died from brain damage as a result of being shaken violently by her own caregiver. Press Release: Senate Democratic Conference To Unveil Legislative Package To Combat Heroin Epidemic

The Senate Democratic Conference will announce the introduction of six bills to combat the growing heroin epidemic impacting communities throughout New York State. These six pieces of legislation will  increase penalties for selling opioids that result in death, equip first responders with overdose-stopping drugs, require health insurance providers to cover rehabilitation and anti-addiction medications, create a teen heroin abuse PSA campaign and provide opioid rehabilitation services in communities.

In the News: Women Leaders Pen Letter to Cuomo, Ask Him to Support Local Wage Standards (Source: Legislative Gazette)

In a letter to Gov. Andrew Cuomo and the Legislature, 130 of the state's most powerful women urged the passage of #RaiseUpNY, legislation that would allow cities and counties to raise wages above the state's minimum of $8 an hour.

The #RaiseUpNY bill (S.6516/A.9036) is a plan to allow individual cities and counties within the state to set their own minimum wage, based on factors such as cost of living. But Gov. Andrew Cuomo has criticized the plan saying it would create a chaotic situation throughout the state by pitting cities and counties against each other.

Leader Stewart-Cousins Speaking at the NFTA Press Conference

Senate Democratic Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins visited Senator Kennedy in Buffalo on Sunday, April 12th to experience the challenges and opportunities facing Buffalo and Western New York. During her visit, Senator Kennedy highlighted the exciting progress happening throughout the area, especially along the waterfront and at the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus, and detailed the challenges that remain ahead. One of those challenges is ensuring the NFTA receives increased support from the state, so that region’s resurgence is not slowed down by a struggling transit system.

Over the weekend as part of the tour to get to know Buffalo, Democratic Conference Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins stopped by 145 Broadway, the home of the Colored Musician Club of Buffalo, frequented by jazz legends such as Duke Ellington, Billie Holiday, and Ella Fitzgerald during their time, and the longest operating African-American Musicians Club in the nation which still runs the best live jazz music in town.

Press Release: Democratic Conference Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins Announces Increased CHIPS Funding

Albany, NY - Democratic Conference Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins (D/I/WF – 35th District) announced today that the 2014-15 NYS Budget included a $40 million increase in CHIPS funding to help local governments pay for road repairs caused by the extreme winter weather. The additional funding increased this year’s CHIPS spending to $438 million Statewide.

The County of Westchester will be receiving $2,817,055.24 in CHIPS funding, an increase of $91,199.37 over the previous year. Municipalities in the 35th Senate District will receive a total of $5.5 million in CHIPS funding an increase of receive $487,000 over last year.

Women’s rights advocates and legislators released a letter Monday urging Gov. Andrew Cuomo to support a bill that would allow cities and counties to increase their own minimum wage.

“Failing to adequately raise the minimum wage has hampered our state’s economic growth and kept over 1.1 million hard-working New Yorkers in poverty,” State Democratic Conference Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins, D-Yonkers, said in a statement. “A majority of minimum wage earners are women, many of whom are desperately trying to provide for their families and make ends meet.”
