National Night Out is a national movement that began in 1984 as part of "an effort to promote involvement in crime prevention activities and send a message to criminals that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back ". Every year, Senator Stewart-Cousins participates in National Night Out to encourage police-community partnerships throughout her district. This year, she was at the at the 3rd Precinct in Yonkers and at the Public Safety Highway in White Plains where she met with constituents and the media and spoke of the importance of neighborhood camaraderie.
Democratic Conference Leader, Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins joined Environment New York at a news conference in Yonkers, regarding the release of their report on the top 10 states for solar power. While our state is not in the top ten yet, Senator Stewart-Cousins says its on the way, with innovative programs and government comittment to provide the resources necessary so that more people turn to the sun as an energy alternative.

Yonkers, NY - Democratic Conference Leader, Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins, has written to the New York State Public Service Commission in opposition to the proposed United Water New Rochelle rate increase in advance of a public hearing on the matter to be held tomorrow evening.
The Westchester County Heritage Celebration continued on Sunday, August 3rd, this time celebrating the Indian heritage where Senator Stewart-Cousins spoke about her appreciation for the culture and presented a proclamation.
On Tuesday, July 29th, Senator Stewart-Cousins participated in the JCY-Westchester Community Partners Summer Reading Buddies Program by volunteering to read one-on-one with a 2nd grader at the Yonkers Library. The Summer Reading Buddies Program, which continues to grow every year, meets twice a week for six weeks in the Yonkers Riverfront Library and once a week at the Mount Vernon Public Library. Children work with our volunteers on their assigned summer reading projects while their parents attend workshops on life skills offered through partner organizations.
Senator Stewart-Cousins took time on Wednesday, July 30th, to attend the Afya Annual Volunteer Award Ceremony and recognize the hard work of the individuals helping people in developing countries in Africa and the Caribbean.
During the summer, Westchester County hosts various cultural heritage celebrations at parks throughout the county to give residents and visitors the opportunity to experience the different foods, music, and traditions that each culture bring to Westchester. Senator Stewart-Cousins joined in on the celebration of the Italian heritage on Sunday, July 27th which was held at Kensico Dam Plaza in Valhalla, NY, spending time getting to know her constituents including members of the Order of the Sons of Italy in America, pictured here with the Senator.

The ribbon cutting at the Library Lofts in downtown Yonkers took place on Wednesday, July 23rd. The former library building has been transformed into 23 rental apartments and a retail store. The city got a $3.5 million RestoreNY grant plus several million dollars to also reveal the Saw Mill River covered over by pavement just behind the building. This is a public-private partnership involving Fidelco Realty Group, Empire State Development and the City of Yonkers, and is located in her district.
Yonkers, NY - Democratic Conference Leader, Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins, was joined by Empire State Development President and CEO Kenneth Adams, and the President of Kawasaki Rail Car Inc., Hiroki Iwasaki, to announce final approval of a $500,000 state grant to keep the company and 375 employees in Yonkers.
Leader Stewart-Cousins accepting the "Most Coordinated Boat" award from Governor Andrew Cuomo on Sunday, July 20th following the Adirondack Challenge, with Senator Gianaris and Senate Democratic Conference staffers. As she accepted the award, the Leader said, "We are all ambassadors for Upstate." The Adirondack Challenge highlights the summer tourism opportunities in the region, including outdoor activities such as rafting and fly fishing. The event, held in Indian Lake this year, attracted elected officials, tourism industry leaders and summer enthusiasts to Upstate New York.
Democratic Conference Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins joined Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman on July 17th in White Plains to announce that they would propose legislation that would protect New York women in response to the U.S. Supreme Court decision in Burwell v. Hobby Lobby which limits the scope of contraceptive mandate and results in the loss of insurance coverage for prescription contraceptive for many women. The Reproductive Rights Disclosure Act would require employers both to give current employees 90 days’ notice before changing contraceptive coverage and to notify prospective employees of any contraceptive coverage they offer their employees.
A lovely and talented young woman, Miss Westchester 2014 Mayra Avila with the Senate resolution in her honor. She came to this country at age 4 from Ecuador, attended public school in Yonkers, graduated from Mercy College in Dobbs Ferry and was the valedictorian of her graduate school class also at Mercy College. She teaches math in Ossining and is encouraging young girls to believe in themselves and their abilities. A wonderful role model who will next compete to be Miss New York.
As a way to encourage more women to pursue a career in public policy, Senator Stewart-Cousins has made it a tradition to attend the Summer Justice Academy for Young Women to speak to high school girls about her role as a State Senator and Democratic Conference Leader, discussing how they can change so many lives in the role and what they can do now to start preparing.
On July 12th, she stopped by the Greenburgh Central School District Summer Retreat to meet with educators and learn more about their needs for the upcoming school year. Also at the event (pictured with the Senator) was Assemblyman Tom Abinanti.

The town of Greenburgh is in the process of foreclosing on properties that are behind on their property taxes. Many homeowners don’t understand that property tax foreclosure puts them in jeopardy of losing their homes, and the entire equity in their homes as well – even if they owe only a small amount. Additionally, many homeowners are not getting all the property tax exemptions they are entitled to, and are therefore paying more than they need to in taxes.
