SNUG & Alfonzo Conrad William's Baketball Tournament

(Yonkers - July 4th) When the Senator brought the SNUG program to Yonkers in 2010, it quickly made an impact the community. While the Yonkers Police Department is on the frontline of fighting crime in our city, SNUG has been instrumental in helping reduce gun violence and shootings, and steering at-risk kids away from violence. On July 4th, the Senator attended the SNUG & Alfonzo Conrad William's Basketball Tournament at Whitney Young Park in Yonkers.

Northeast Women in Public Finance Panel Discussion

(Manhattan - June 30th) Senator Stewart-Cousins spoke to the Northeast Women in Public Finance group in Manhattan, along with Congresswoman Kathleen Rice, about the challenges of running for office and the resources available to help women get into politics. The moderator was Beth Smayda with ACA Financial Guaranty, the NEWPF Co-Founder. She is also a Councilwoman in White Plains and one of the Senator's constituents.

Press Release: Dobbs Ferry Able To Create Parking Permit System

Yonkers, NY - Dobbs Ferry is one step closer to creating a permit parking system in the village following passage of a bill introduced by Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins, the Senate Democratic Leader, and Assemblyman Thomas Abinanti.  The village requested the ability to do so in order to provide parking relief for Dobbs Ferry residents who live near the train station and have difficulty parking on the street near their homes. The legislation requires the Governor’s signature to become law, and will take effect 60 days after it is signed.

Stewart-Cousins was the first female in state history to lead her party. She was also part of the first state delegation, along with Gov. Andrew Cuomo, to visit Cuba after the process of normalization between the communist nation and the U.S. began. 

"Its a humbling, humbling role to play," Stewart-Cousins told Daily Voice. "The obligation of being first in anything--especially if its a good thing--is to leave a path so you won't be the last."

Walk To Defeat ALS

(Purchase - June 14th) Senator Stewart-Cousins joined Congressman Eliot Engel, walk participants and Yonkers-native Pat Quinn at the start of the "Walk To Defeat ALS" in Purchase on June 14th. After the ribbon was cut, the Senator shared words of encouragement with the participants. Pat Quinn, who has ALS, helped the Ice Bucket Challenge go viral in 2014, raising $63 million and worldwide awareness regarding the incurable disease also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease. Earlier this year, the Senator sponsored a Senate Resolution recognizing Pat for his efforts. The walk is part of the ALS Association's annual fundraising efforts as they search for a cure.

Press Release: Yonkers State Delegation Release: Yonkers to Join the Other Big Five School Districts in Requiring Five Year Olds to Attend Kindergarten

Yonkers, NY - Yonkers will join the other Big Five School Districts in New York State by requiring five year olds in the city to attend kindergarten. The Yonkers State Delegation, including Senators Andrea Stewart-Cousins and George Latimer and Assembly Members Gary Pretlow and Shelley Mayer sponsored and passed legislation to increase kindergarten attendance in the city. Syracuse, Buffalo, Rochester and New York City already require kindergarten attendance, and this bill, requested by the Yonkers Board of Education, allows Yonkers to do the same.

The bill awaits the Governor’s signature to become law.

Important Bills Passed This Week: State Workforce Injury Reduction Act, Reducing Costs For Localities, and More!

Expanding Eligibility for Admission to the NYS Veterans Home: Senate bill, S.305A, sponsored Democratic Senator Adriano Espaillat, broadens the requirements for admissions to the New York State veterans’ nursing home by including veterans who served in combat operations during our most recent conflicts and wars. These facilities provide veterans with valuable rehabilitation to improve their quality of life when they return home. Previously, eligibility was only allowed for veterans who served honorably in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam.

Dobbs Ferry Waterfront Park Rededication Ceremony

(Dobbs Ferry - June 13th) Dobbs Ferry has done a terrific job of revitalizing its Hudson riverfront. On June 13th, Senator Stewart-Cousins attended the official dedication following several years of work. The Senator supported the village's request for $2.3 million of state funding that helped make the project a reality. The park is a wonderful example of a public/private partnership as well, given that Westchester County added $2 million and a local couple, Arch and Marie McKellar, also contributed one million dollars. There is improved access to the majestic Hudson with a boat launch for kayaking, canoeing and fishing. Children and families will enjoy playgrounds and picnic areas.

Press Release: Time is Running out for Rent-Control Renewal: Legislators, Tenants & Activists Speak Out

Yonkers, NY - Senate Democratic Leader, State Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins, and Assemblymembers Shelley Mayer and J. Gary Pretlow were joined by tenants and tenant advocates today in calling on Governor Cuomo and the Republican Senate to renew and strengthen rent regulations that are set to expire on June 15, 2015. With more than 25,000 rent stabilized units in Westchester, with 16,000 of those in Yonkers. That number has been reduced from almost 32,000 in 1997, elected leaders, tenants and tenant advocates gathered to press for stronger laws to protect tenants and prevent further loss of affordable housing. Strengthening and renewing tenant protections will help keep thousands of families in affordable homes in their own communities.

Center for Women in Government and Civil Society New Leadership Luncheon

(Albany - June 1st) Democratic Conference Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins addressed a roundtable of young women at the Center for Women in Government and Civil Society New Leadership Luncheon. The Senator, joined by Assemblywoman Nily Rozic, discussed women involvement in government and politics. Currently, women make up less than 25% of the New York State legislative body. As the first African-American woman to lead a conference, and as one of the leading supporters of women involvement in government, the Senator enjoyed her time speaking the to future female leaders, that it was up to the younger generation to improve the statistics.

Helping Military Spouses Continue Profession in NYS: States often differ in their specific licensing requirements and cause military spouses to face delays and the expense of re-licensure to continue practicing their professions after moving to a new state to accommodate their spouse’s service. Senate bill S.2947 allows New York State to modify licensing requirements and processes for these military spouses without impacting the standards of the state.

Press Release: Senator Stewart-Cousins Recognizes Irvington Fire Chief Chris DePaoli with Senate Resolution for His Act of Bravery

Albany, NY - Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins, the Senate Democratic Leader,  recognized Irvington Fire Chief Chris DePaoli today in the State Senate with a Resolution, for his role in saving a woman’s life during a violent attack. On April 8, 2015, the Chief was driving with his two daughters, on their way to a softball game, when they passed the Irvington Train Station. At the stop sign, he spotted a man and a woman arguing, and saw the man was holding a knife. Without concern for his own safety, he jumped out of his truck and grabbed a baseball bat, running toward the couple. He was able to separate the two before police arrived to subdue the man and provide emergency assistance. The female victim had been stabbed in the chest and neck including the jugular vein.
