New York State of Health: Getting Started with the New, More Affordable Health Plan

Under the federal Affordable Care Act, New York's new marketplace for health insurance debuted on October 1st. New York State of Health (NYSOH) is an organized marketplace of health insurance policies designed to help New Yorkers find affordable health coverage. NYSOH allows visitors to compare costs, determine eligibility, evaluate insurance options, and purchase health insurance online, in person, or by mail. NYSOH also tells applicants what financial assistance is available to them when buying coverage through the marketplace.

Ferry Festa 2013

No other event gets local Dobbs Ferry businesses together than the annual Ferry Festa, this year, on Saturday, October 5th from 1:00PM to 8:00PM at the downtown area of Dobbs Ferry. Irvington Fire Dept. 133rd Annual Inspection

Senator Stewart-Cousins took part in the annual tradition of inspecting firetruck engines and equipment to make sure that they are in good working condition at Irvington Fire Department's 133rd Annual Inspection on Saturday, October 5th. At this special event, the Senator had the pleasure of meeting some of New York's Bravest, many of whom have been serving the Village of Irvington for more than twenty years.

Senator Recognized for Leadership in Minority and Women Owned Business Enterprises

For her leadership in promoting minority and women owned businesses, Senator Stewart-Cousins was recognized with two separate awards this October. On October 3rd at the 3rd Annual New York State MWBE Forum in Albany, Leader Stewart-Cousins was honored by Governor Andrew Cuomo with a certificate presented to her by Mylan Denerstein, Counsel to the Governor. Two weeks later, the African American Chamber of Commerce of Westchester and Rockland honored the Senator with their Political Leader of the Year award for her leadership and support of MWBEs. In a statement, Senator Stewart-Cousins said, “Since the 2007 disparity study, New York State has made long-overdue progress in promoting MWBEs and increasing their participation in State projects.

Senator Stewart-Cousins makes sure to recognize the individuals who strive to improve the quality of life for the elderly and disabled. That is exactly what she did at Cabrini of Westchester in Dobbs Ferry when she presented a Legislative Resolution to Patricia Tinston, a clinical health nurse at the facility. The Resolution, which passed the State Senate this year, recognized Ms. Tinston for receiving the LeadingAge NY Long-Term Care Employee of Distinction Award.

White Plains Columbus Day Festival 2013

The City of White Plains kicked off their Italian Heritage and Culture Month with a 4th Annual Columbus Day Festival on September 28th and 29th which Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins was delighted to partake in. This family-friendly festival had games, live music from top Italian-American performers around the area, and other traditional amusements, arts and crafts vendor and authentic ethnic Italian food for all to enjoy.

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and all New Yorkers are encouraged to take the time to promote breast cancer awareness and early detection. 

The fight for breast cancer starts with early detection. Preventative screenings, routine mammograms and setting up regular visits can make all of the difference in the battle against disease and the fight for survival.

Excluding skin cancer, nearly 1 in 4 cancers diagnosed in women is breast cancer. Though 95% of diagnoses are in women aged 40 and up, younger women and roughly 2,000 men are annually diagnosed with this disease.

Bill Authorizing Improvements to Dangerous Intersection in Greenburgh Signed by Governor Cuomo

Greenburgh, NY - One of the most dangerous intersections in Westchester County will receive a much needed safety improvement this year and a law sponsored by Greenburgh’s State Legislators and signed by Governor Cuomo Friday made it possible.

The law, sponsored by Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins in the Senate and Assemblyman Tom Abinanti in the Assembly, authorizes small parcels of Westchester County parkland adjacent to the intersection of Jackson Avenue and North Sprain Road in Hastings to be used to straighten a dangerous "S curve” which has caused over 80 accidents and two deaths over the last three years. The Legislators introduced the law at the request of Westchester County Legislator Mary Jane Shimsky.
