Leader Stewart-Cousins Receives the "Most Coordinated Boat" Award at the Adirondack Challenge

Leader Stewart-Cousins accepting the "Most Coordinated Boat" award from Governor Andrew Cuomo on Sunday, July 20th following the Adirondack Challenge, with Senator Gianaris and Senate Democratic Conference staffers. As she accepted the award, the Leader said, "We are all ambassadors for Upstate." The Adirondack Challenge highlights the summer tourism opportunities in the region, including outdoor activities such as rafting and fly fishing. The event, held in Indian Lake this year, attracted elected officials, tourism industry leaders and summer enthusiasts to Upstate New York.

Reproductive Rights Disclosure Act Press Conference

Democratic Conference Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins joined Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman on July 17th in White Plains to announce that they would propose legislation that would protect New York women in response to the U.S. Supreme Court decision in Burwell v. Hobby Lobby which limits the scope of contraceptive mandate and results in the loss of insurance coverage for prescription contraceptive for many women. The Reproductive Rights Disclosure Act would require employers both to give current employees 90 days’ notice before changing contraceptive coverage and to notify prospective employees of any contraceptive coverage they offer their employees.

Senator Stewart-Cousins Presents Resolution to Mayra Avila, Miss Westchester 2014

A lovely and talented young woman, Miss Westchester 2014 Mayra Avila with the Senate resolution in her honor. She came to this country at age 4 from Ecuador, attended public school in Yonkers, graduated from Mercy College in Dobbs Ferry and was the valedictorian of her graduate school class also at Mercy College. She teaches math in Ossining and is encouraging young girls to believe in themselves and their abilities. A wonderful role model who will next compete to be Miss New York.

As a way to encourage more women to pursue a career in public policy, Senator Stewart-Cousins has made it a tradition to attend the Summer Justice Academy for Young Women to speak to high school girls about her role as a State Senator and Democratic Conference Leader, discussing how they can change so many lives in the role and what they can do now to start preparing.

As New Yorkers join in the celebration of the 238th birthday of our nation today, let us not forget those who came before us. The determination to establish our independence resulted in the birth of our country. Their strength, courage and spirit remain American characteristics today.

We cannot take for granted the freedom and protections we enjoy and expect.We owe a debt of gratitude to all veterans and those who serve in the military fighting for our freedom.

While you celebrate our nation’s birthday, please also pause to reflect on the contributions veterans and their families have made. I wish you all a happy and safe Fourth of July.

It is hard to believe that it has only been 50 years since the Civil Rights Act of 1964 became law, following hundreds of years of discrimination against black Americans in the most basic human rights including education, housing, and employment.

Today serves as a reminder to all Americans that the Civil Rights movement and this landmark legislation opened the doors of inclusion regardless of race, color, sex, disability, religion, familial status and national origin.

Keeper's House Groundbreaking Ceremony

On June 27th, Senator Stewart-Cousins joined Friends of the Old Croton Aqueduct in Dobbs Ferry to break ground on the restoration of the Keeper's House. From 1857 on, this landmark structure was home to the superintendent for this stretch of the underground waterway that ran into New York City. The Keeper's House will become a visitor and education center for those who walk along the trailway.

Grant Park Apartments Phase II Groundbreaking Ceremony

Senate Stewart-Cousins joined State Housing Commissioner Darryl Towns, Mayor Mike Spano, and others at the Grant Park Apartments Phase II Ground Breaking Ceremony on Tuesday, June 24th on the site of the former Mulford Gardens located in Yonkers. Grant Park II is the fourth phase of the redevelopment of the public housing complex, and consists of two four-story buildings that contain a mix of one, two and three bedroom apartments, totaling in 56 new units. They are being made available to individuals and households earning at or below 60 percent of the area median income.

Constituent Service at Nodine Hill Senior Center

Members and staff of the Nodine Hill Senior Center in Yonkers welcomed Senator Stewart-Cousins with a cake. The Senator held Constituent Service Hours at the Nodine Hill Senior Center to provide Yonkers residents answers to and assistance with various matters including housing, Medicare and Medicaid, youth programs unemployment benefits, among others.

Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins attended the Andalusia School 8th & 12th Grade Graduation Ceremony on the evening of Wednesday, June 22nd to remind the students about the importance of education and how far they all have come. Located in Yonkers, the mission of the Adalusia School is "to nurture confident and committed Muslim youth who will draw upon the Qur’an and Sunnah to achieve moral, spiritual, and material excellence in all fields of endeavor". Also at the graduation was Assemblymember Shelly Mayer.

St. Elizabeth Seton Children’s Foundation Block Party

Senator Stewart-Cousins kicked off the summer with residents of the Elizabeth Seton Pediatric Center and their families at the first annual St. Elizabeth Seton Children’s Foundation Block Party on Saturday, June 21st. The free event filled with games, food, arts and crafts, live music, a petting zoo, and raffles, was an opportunity for friends and neighbors of the community to learn more about the Foundation as well as meet the residents of the Pediatric Center.

Yonkers and Rochester on Friday had their red-light camera pilot programs extended for five years, and Mount Vernon and New Rochelle will be able to add them.

The approvals from the state Legislature came in the final hours of the legislative session, which ended Friday evening. The bills will now head to Cuomo's desk for approval.

Senate Democratic Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins, D-Yonkers, said her city wanted the bill extended.

Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins, Democratic Conference Leader, Announces Senate Approval for New York State Medical Marijuana Program

Yonkers, NY - Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins, the Democratic Conference Leader, today announced passage of legislation to establish a medical marijuana program in New York State.

Prior to voting for the bill, Senator Stewart-Cousins said, “I hope that everyone who has taken the time, pushed this rock up the hill, understands that we could never have done it without you. Our hats off, much gratitude. Let’s get this done.”

The legislation includes provisions to ensure medical marijuana is reserved only for patients with serious conditions and is dispensed and administered by the appropriate state agencies to ensure that the program cannot be abused.
