Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins memorialized the life and achievements of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with a resolution, commenting on how much he had accomplished in his brief life of 39 years. In Senator Stewart-Cousins remarks, she stressed that Dr. King's belief in nonviolence changed the world, and how it is still relevant today, reminding us that he died speaking for jobs and freedom, and argued that Dr. King would be working for those who work hard and still don't have sufficient opportunities if he was alive today. “It is clear from today’s Senate hearing that there are serious concerns about the Common Core curriculum, which is why I have been calling for a moratorium on the consequences for Common Core. There is overwhelming evidence that we are moving at too fast a pace and not giving our teachers and students proper training in these new principles. While the goals of Common Core are commendable and the methods to implement those goals are innovative, the fact remains that this new curriculum is untested and not performing adequately.

“For too long our middle class has been stifled by crushing property taxes, and the Senate Democratic Conference will work with the Governor to achieve greater tax fairness while ensuring state government provides increased and expanded education and health care services. Nepperhan Community Center 28th Annual MLK Breakfast

On Monday, January 20th, Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins attended the Nepperhan Community Center's 28th Annual MLK Breakfast in Yonkers, NY to begin her all-day commemoration of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. At the Breakfast, the Senator took part in the discussion of the late Rev. Dr. King's dream, and how it is still alive 50 years later. Also at the Breakfast were Mayor Mike Spano and Rev. Dr. W. Franklyn Richardson, Keynote Speaker, and honoring Andrea Clark Brown, Board of Directors President of the Nepperhan Community Center.

Commemorating Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

This Monday, January 20th 2014, is Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, an excellent opportunity for Americans to honor Dr. King’s legacy through service. The MLK Day of Service empowers individuals, strengthens communities, bridges barriers, creates solutions to social problems, and moves us closer to Dr. King’s vision of a harmonious society.

Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is a perfect example of a leader that children and adults alike can be proud to emulate on the day of his birth and all year round. The values and goals Dr. King promoted still ring true today and can be realized through recommitting ourselves to community service.

Hudson River Greenway Link Project Study Complete, Next Steps Pursued

On January 17th, Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins attended a press conference to show her support for the Hudson River Greenway Link Project. At the press conference, U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer announced the completion of the Project study, and the next steps he plans to take in pursuit of the development of the “bicycle and pedestrian-friendly” pathway along the Hudson River which would connect the Manhattan Waterfront Greenway with the Old Croton Aqueduct in Yonkers. The goal of the pathway is to create “a continuous greenway for cyclists, pedestrians and commuters while “transforming Westchester waterfront, boosting recreation, and bringing more economic activity in the region”.

Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins Mourning the Death of Nelson Mandela

On the Senate Floor, Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins spoke to mourn the passing of former South African President Nelson Mandela. The Senator praised Mandela's commitment to nothing less than the complete emancipation of his people, and reminded the chamber that he refused to exit prison for 27 years until this dream was realized. The Senator concluded her remarks by encouraging her colleagues to abide by the same courage and ideals of equality that Nelson Mandela cherished.

Senate Democratic Conference Introduces Bill To Move State Primary Election Date To June

Albany, NY - The Senate Democratic Conference today announced the introduction of legislation to hold the state’s Primary Election day for state and federal offices in June. This billwould save state and local governments $50 million by holding a single primary election andmoving Primary Election day from the month of September.

“This is a common sense and good government approach to save our local taxpayers at least $50million and will help increase voter turnout, giving more people a voice in the electoral process ,” Senate Democratic Conference Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins said.

$2.7 Million in State Economic Development Grants Rewarded to Yonkers, White Plains and New Rochelle for Job-Creating Projects

Projects in the cities of Yonkers, White Plains and New Rochelle received a total of $3.9 million in grants and incentives from the Regional Economic Development Council awards on Monday, December 17th. Senator Stewart-Cousins co-represents the three cities.

Meeting with Lower Hudson Valley Council of School Superintendents

On Friday, December 13th, the Lower Hudson Valley Council of School Superintendents hosted their annual legislative meeting to discuss education policy for the upcoming legislative year. As she does every year, Senator Stewart-Cousins participated in the meeting. Two of the main topics of concern shared by the Superintendents were the implementation of the Common Core Standards and the sharing of student data with third parties. Senator Stewart-Cousins explained that she supports a slower phase-in of the Common Core implementation, and also supports allowing parents to opt-out of having their student's data shared with third parties.

International Human Rights Day Celebration

To celebrate International Human Rights Day, Senator Stewart-Cousins joined the celebration of Yonkers Commission on Human Rights’ 50th Anniversary enacted on October 1, 1963 by the City of Yonkers. The breakfast event was held on Saturday, December 14th at the Riverview on Hastings-on-Hudson with a theme "Advancing Women's Equality" which explored the state of gender equality today and examine possible strategies and steps to promote and realize gender equity in the future.
