Scarsdale-Edgemont Girl Scouts Gold Award Ceremony

Senator Stewart-Cousins stopped by the Scarsdale-Edgemont Girl Scouts Gold Award Ceremony on Sunday, June 8th to recognize girls receiving the Girl Scouts Gold Award. These awards are given to girls who "live the Girl Scout Promise & Law in their daily life by identifiying issues they care about and making a lasting positive impact in the communities". This year's recipient included Angela Coco, Julia Cotter, Shannon Cover, Gabriella Salvatore, Kalila Sharpio, Madeline Ware, and Dana Wohlfarth, all pictured with the Senator.

The Wiley Christian Academy located in Yonkers, NY held its first Graduation Commencement Exercise on Sunday, June 8th where Senator Stewart-Cousins spoke words of encouragement to the 19 kindergarten students graduating from the academy and their family members.

Leader Stewart-Cousins Joins Advocates for Working Families in Call for Passage of Paid Family Leave Insurance Bill

Democratic Conference Leader Stewart-Cousins, joined by Senators Addabbo and Krueger, urged her colleagues in the Senate to pass the Paid Family Leave Insurance Bill (S.4742-B) before the end of session at a press conference held on Monday, June 9th. The bill, which passed the Assembly in March and is sponsored by Senator Addabbo in the Senate, would provide workers with up to 12 weeks of partial wages during time off from work taken to care for an infant or seriously ill family member. This bill would be entirely employee-paid through small payroll deductions that start at just $0.45 cents and rise to roughly $0.88 a week over four years.

A Celebration of Gratitude: Honoring North Street Community Partners for the Gift of 317 North Street

Senator Stewart-Cousins joined Cardinal Dolan, the Archbishop of New York, on Wednesday, June 4th at "A Celebration of Gratitude", a ceremony to honor North Street Community Partners for donating the 317 North Street building and property, making it the permanent home for the John A. Coleman School and Children's Rehabilitation Center. The school and rehab center provide educational and therapeutic services to over 5,000 of New York's children dealing with complex medical conditions. Press Release: Senate Democratic Conference Members Hold Public Forum On The New York State DREAM Act

Albany, NY - The Senate Democratic Conference today held a public forum on the New York State DREAM Act. This legislation will would provide access to state-funded financial aid (TAP) and scholarships to qualifying undocumented youth as they seek to attend higher education institutions. Forum participants were provided testimony by fiscal and education experts, as well as undocumented youth who would qualify for education aid if the DREAM Act passed into law.

Westchester County Receives $738K for Youth Summer Jobs Program

The County of Westchester has received $737,924 to put young people from low-income households to work this summer. 

Funded through the New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance (OTDA), the Summer Youth Employment Program connects thousands of selected participants all over the state to jobs that will help them gain valuable work experience and much-needed income. Participants will work in places such as parks, nursing homes, summer camps, child care organizations, senior centers, community recreation centers, and other participating local businesses.

Moye of New Rochelle into the 2014 New York State Senate Veterans Hall of Fame to represent the 35th District. The 99 year old is a World War II veteran who served in Africa and Europe. He is currently the Chaplain Emeritus for the American Legion Post 8 and the United Veterans Memorial and Patriotic Association of New Rochelle.
