Important Bills Passed This Week: Awarding High School Diplomas To All Veterans, Protecting State Parks, and More!

Awarding High School Diplomas To All Veterans: Under current law, Operation Recognition permits issuance of high school diplomas to WWII, Korean War, and Vietnam War veterans only. Senate Bill S.3408 will expand eligibility to include all veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces.

Protecting State Parks: The legislation, Senate Bill S.956, was sponsored by Democratic Senator Jose Serrano and prohibits littering on our state’s park lands and creates stringent penalties for violators. A first offense would result in a fine not to exceed $750 and/or not more than 10 hours of community service at a State Park. Second or subsequent offenses would result in a fine not to exceed $1,400 and/or not more than 15 hours of community service at a State Park.

Press Release: Senator Stewart-Cousins Joins Rally for Yonkers Public Schools at the State Capitol

Albany, NY - State Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins, the Senate Democratic Leader, addressed Tuesday’s rally in support of additional funding for Yonkers Public Schools at the State Capitol in Albany. 

“We have a responsibility to educate our children,” Senator Stewart-Cousins told the crowd of students, parents, administrators and city leaders who had gathered on what is referred to as the Million Dollar staircase. “One of the things we want to do is to turn this Million Dollar Staircase into a $28 million staircase. Package addresses failures in this year’s budget and the Common Core rollout

Albany, NY - This week the Senate Democratic Conference, led by Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins, introduced bills to reform the state’s public school system and address the concerns raised by education stakeholders due to the proposed changes made in the 2015 State Budget. The legislative package will implement reforms to the teacher evaluation system, increase fairness for student assessments and provide support for community schools that offer wraparound social services.

Northeast District National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women’s Clubs, Inc 57th Annual District Conference Opening Breakfast

(White Plains - May 15th) The Senator was the keynote speaker at the Northeast District National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women’s Clubs, Inc. (NANBPWC) at their 57th Annual District Conference Opening Breakfast. Founded in 1935, NANBPWC is "a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting leadership, entrepreneurship, technology, health, education and economic development among Black women, their families and their communities".

"Today is National Armed Forces Day, an opportunity to stand together in thanking and celebrating the brave men and women committed to protecting American values and defending our freedom. I urge all New Yorkers to recognize the dedication and selflessness our service members demonstrate each and every day.

First celebrated in 1950, National Armed Forces Day celebrates those who serve in all of the U.S. military branches, and showcases their skills, accomplishments, and readiness. President Harry S. Truman proclaimed the first Armed Forces Day, Saturday, May 20, 1950.

NARAL Lobby Day

(Albany - May 5th) Democratic Conference Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins addressed an impassioned crowd at the NARAL Lobby Day in Albany. In her speech, the Leader mentioned the fact that the Senate has been going to sleep when it relates to legislation regarding women, women’s rights and women’s reproductive rights. She stressed how imperative it is for members of the legislature to be bipartisan about these issues to protect women across New York State. She closed by urging the crowd to go back to their districts after the lobby day is over, and energize the base of support to foster a more progressive state.

(Albany - May 5th) Every May, as part of National Older Americans Month, the New York State Office of the Aging celebrates older New Yorkers at a Senior Citizens' Day event in Albany. Senator Stewart-Cousins caught up with 95 year old Seymour Scharf of Hartsdale -- a constituent and an active volunteer, fundraiser and supporter of programs in Greenburgh -- who is being honored along with others from all over the state at this special event.

Martin Luther King, Jr.Memorial Re-dedication Ceremony

(Albany - April 29th) An unveiling of a new glass sculpture titled “Seeds of Enlightenment” took place on Wednesday morning at the Empire State Plaza as part of the Martin Luther King, Jr.Memorial Re-dedication Ceremony. The original sculpture designed by artist Eric Hilton was dedicated in 2000 but badly damaged in July 2014. Corning Inc. and The Corning Museum of Glass decided to replace the memorial sculpture with a new one that bears the same title as the original. The Senator took part in the unveiling and said in a press release about the event, “I’m honored to join the Office of General Services, Corning Inc., and The Corning Museum of Glass for the re-dedication of this beautiful memorial honoring the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Tarrytown YMCA's Healthy Kids Day

(Tarrytown - April 25th) The Tarrytown YMCA hosted Healthy Kids Day as part of YMCA's national initiative to improve the health and well-being of children during the summer months. The annual event features fun activities for the whole family, informational booths about fitness and healthy living, as well as live music by local kids bands. A member of one of the bands, Second Son (pictured above with the Senator), met the Senator a few years back when he was just starting to learn how to play the trumpet. He was playing in public for donation, and the Senator witnessed kids poking fun of the amateur way he sounded, so she approached him, put $5 in a hat, and encouraged him to keep playing.

March of Dimes Walk For Babies 75th Year Celebration

(White Plains - April 26th) Stepping off at the March of Dimes Walk for Babies in White Plains, Senator Stewart-Cousins and her grandson Kyle joined hundreds of others including White Plains Mayor Tom Roach for the annual event. The March of Dimes is celebrating 75 years of research, breakthroughs and vaccines. Still, nearly half a billion babies are born too soon each year. The event raises money for the organization's efforts to prevent premature births.

Democratic Senator Daniel Squadron will Today Force a Committee Vote to Close the LLC Loophole and Reform How Campaigns are Funded

 Albany, NY - The Senate Democratic Conference today called on the Senate Republicans in the Elections Committee to pass legislation that will close the LLC loophole and help clean up Albany. Due to Republican refusal to even consider this critical legislation, Democratic Senator Daniel Squadron filed a motion for committee consideration to simply have this ethics reform initiative discussed by the Senate Elections Committee. Today’s vote on the legislation in the Senate Elections Committee follows decisions in recent weeks by Republicans in both the State Legislature and the Board of Elections to keep the loophole open.
