TSTT Recognizes Leader Stewart-Cousins with Legacy Award at 18th Annual Recognition Breakfast

Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins was honored at the Today's Student, Tomorrow's Teachers (TSTT) 18th Annual Recognition Breakfast with the Legacy Award for her commendable work in public service. A former teacher and true champion for quality education, Leader Stewart-Cousins has been a long-time supporter of the TSTT program which "recruits and mentors economically-challenged high school students interested in pursuing a career in teaching". This award was presented by TSTT's Executive Director Dr. Bettye H. Perkins and Yonkers Public School Superintendent Bernard P. Pierorazio at the Renaissance Westchester Hotel on Friday, May 3rd.

Abortion Debate Continues on Albany (Source: YNN)

But Senate Democratic Minority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins believes an abortion rights bill can pass and will gain Republican support, pointing out that the state's original abortion law did receive GOP backing. Stewart-Cousins said, “When we passed the bill that allowed for abortion in 1970, we had Republican votes. I believe we will have Republican votes.”

Senate Democratic Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins, D-Yonkers, said on an Albany public radio show Thursday that she “can’t imagine” there won’t be bipartisan support for a bill to strengthen New York’s abortion laws, which she views as a simple “updating” of state statutes to reflect federal standards.

Stewart-Cousins, who is the first woman to lead a legislative conference in Albany, has sponsored the Reproductive Health Act in recent years, a bill that supporters argue codifies in state law the 1973 landmark Supreme Court case Roe v. Wade. Conservatives and the Catholic church staunchly oppose the bill, arguing it will increase access in a state that already leads the nation in abortions.

May is Asthma Awareness Month

May is Asthma Awareness Month, a month-long period dedicated to help people with asthma take control of this chronic but treatable disease.

Asthma affects over 1.1 million people in New York, causing an average of 301 deaths per year and 41,797 hospitalizations.  It is the leading cause of missed school days for children and workplace absences for adults.  However, asthma is a treatable form of cardio pulmonary disease (COPD) and can be controlled with a variety of common medications.

City of White Plains Annual Cherry Blossom Festival

Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins attended the Annual Cherry Blossom Festival on Sunday, April 28th at Turnure Park in White Plains, NY to celebrate a festival of Japanese culture and tradition. The cherry tree and its blossoms, known as sakura, is a symbol of life, death and rebirth in Japanese culture, which "represents the end of the winter season and the beginning of new life in spring as well as the ephemeral nature of all life". This special event was hosted by Mayor Thomas M. Roach, the White Plains Recreation & Parks Department and the Japan Education Center.

Hispanic Health Day at John Paulding Elementary School

Leader Stewart-Cousins stopped by John Paulding Elementary School in Tarrytown, NY for "Hispanic Health Day", an open clinic aimed at providing free health consultations and screenings to people in need, including non-Hispanics.At the event, the Leader had her blood pressure and glucose screened by volunteer healthcare professionals from Phelps Memorial Hospital Center.

The National Organization for Women (NOW) kicked off Lobby Day for Women's Equality Agenda with a press conference on Tuesday, April 23rd at the LCA Press Room in Albany, NY. A known advocate for women's rights, Leader Stewart-Cousins spoke at the press conference and said, "As a national progressive leader, New York State has made great strides in protecting women's hard-won rights, but more must be done. We must pass the Women's Equality Agenda including enacting the fair pay act, protecting victims of domestic violence from discrimination, and finally give women complete control over their own health care decisions.

Fair Local Election Act Press Conference

On Friday, April 19th, Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins and other local elected officials gathered at the Greenburgh Town Hall to announce the introduction of the Fair Local Election Act, a bill, which would fall under the umbrella of the Fair Election Act, that would allow for local municipalities and counties to opt-in for campaign finance. Sponsored by Leader Stewart-Cousins, the Fair Election Act would provide for optional partial public financing of certain election campaigns in the state and identifies the source of certain political contributions.

The League of Women Voters of Westchester, in collaboration with The American Association of University Women and the White Plains YWCA, sponsored the Running and Winning Workshop on Wednesday, April 17th, a day-long program for selected female students with potentiality to become great leaders.
