Investigations and Government Operations Committee Hearing Regarding MTA

Senator Stewart-Cousins took part in a hearing of the Investigations and Government Operations Committee in Long Island regarding the "Finance, Policies and Practices of the MTA." Testifying at the hearing was Jay Walder, Chairman and CEO of the MTA; Helena Williams, President of the Long Island Railroad; Kenneth B. Bleiwas, Director of Bureau of Agency Analysis, Office of the Comptroller; John Samuelson, President of the Transport Workers Union Local 100; and Ira Greenberg, Chairman of the Executive Committee Permanent Citizens Advisory Committee to the MTA. The hearing examined the MTA's costs and revenue streams, and explored ways to maintain service without drastically increasing fares. Medal of Honor Memorial Ceremony for Civil War Captain William Heermance

Senator Stewart-Cousins spoke at a memorial ceremony for Civil War Captain William Laing Heermance, the only recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor buried in the City of Yonkers. Organized by the Yonkers Central Veteran's Committee, the annual ceremony took place at Captain Heermance's grave site at Oakland Cemetery, which was discovered six years ago by committee chairman Jack Lotz. The ceremony pays tribute to Captain Heermance's heroic actions at the Battle of Chancellorville, Virginia in 1863 during the American Civil War. During that battle, while serving with Company C, Sixth New York Cavalry, Captain Heermance took command of the regiment as they were surrounded by the enemy.

JAM: Healthy Eating Habits

Senator Stewart-Cousins and the Yonkers Municipal Housing Authority hosted the latest installment of the JAM Program this week at Schlobohm Houses in Yonkers. The topic was healthy eating choices and physical fitness and included activities led by Certified Personal Trainer Taniya Brandon and Health and Nutrition Consultant Kyira Harris. The participants took part in an exercise routine that included jumping jacks, pushups and lunges, and learned about identifying good and bad foods. At the end, they enjoyed a healthy smoothie that included spinach, blueberries, mango and pineapple.

Hawthorne Elementary Schools' "Walk the Green Walk"

Senator Stewart-Cousins joined students, parents and faculty of the Hawthorne Elementary School at the 4th Annual “Walk the Green Walk” this week. The yearly event raises awareness about the importance of protecting the environment. The “Green Walk” began at the elementary school with a parade across Chelsea Street to the Hawthorne Fire Department, and culminated with a ceremony where Senator Stewart-Cousins and other dignitaries addressed the crowd. In her remarks, the Senator summed up the importance of being environmentally conscious with the following poem: “Remember the Earth Carries You Care for her Lovingly Every day.”

With Music Legend Boz Scags and Other Westchester Leaders at the Tarrytown Music Hall

Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins celebrated the 125th Anniversary of the Tarrytown Music Hall, joining elected leaders from all levels of government to recognize the historic Westchester landmark. Honoring Firefighter Mike Giroux and Yonkers Police and Fire Departments

Senator Stewart-Cousins and Assemblyman Mike Spano passed resolutions in honor of Firefighter Mike Giroux and the Yonkers Fire and Police Departments this week, for their heroic rescue of two workers who were dangling 13 stories above ground from a collapsed scaffold at the St. Casimir Apartments in Yonkers on March 4th.

Urging Additional Help for Yonkers Schools

Legislation Would Account for Increased Enrollment and Pre-Kindergarten Program

(Albany)- Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins (35th District- D/WF/I) is urging passage of two bills that she sponsors in the State Senate, which would provide additional State funding to the Yonkers city schools. The first, S. 1011, would provide the Yonkers City Schools with $4.8 million for the district’s Pre-Kindergarten program, and the second, S. 1012 would provide $3.98 million to address the district’s growth of approximately 1500 students. Both bills passed the Senate last year, but did not become law.

Bill to Allow E-Filing of Real Property Documents Passes Senate

Improves Government Efficiency; Saves Taxpayer Dollars

(Albany)- The New York State Senate unamimously passed legislation on March 22, sponsored by Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins (35th District- D/WF/I), which would modernize County Clerk offices throughout the State by allowing real property transactions to be filed electronically. Supported by the New York State Association of County Clerks, the bill (S. 2373) would provide filers with the convenient option of submitting real property documents, such as mortgage deeds or easements, online. This would allow County Clerk to operate more efficiently, reduce paper usage; streamline storage and retrieval capabilities and enhance the accuracy and speed of the filing process, all of which will ultimately save taxpayer dollars.

Rallying to Restore Education Funding

Keeping Current Surcharge Would Stave off Cuts

(Albany)- Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins (35th District- D/WF/I) rallied to restore proposed State budget cuts to education funding today, joining several of her Democratic colleagues and the Alliance for Quality Education at a press conference in the Capital. The Senator says the cuts, totaling over $1.5 billion, can be restored by continuing the income tax surcharge on individuals netting more than $200,000 per year, and couples netting more than $300,000 per year. The surcharge was signed into law in 2009 and is set to expire on December 31, and it would bring over $4 billion in revenue to the State this fiscal year.

Speaking on the Floor About Yonkers Superintendent Bernard Pierorazio

Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins passed a resolution in the New York State Senate today recognizing Yonkers Schools Superintendent Bernard Pierorazio for being named Superintendent of the Year by New York State Council of School Superintendents. The resolution was read in its entirety on the floor of the Senate and passed unanimously.
