Press Release: Senate Democratic Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins Announces Arts Grant

Yonkers, NY - Senate Democratic Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins announces that the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) through ArtsWestchester will distribute funding this month to local artists and organizations in the 35th State Senate District. The grant money was approved in the 2014 State Budget that Senator Stewart-Cousins voted for. ArtsWestchester accepted applications and will award 13 grants in the district, totalling $17,125, for Arts Alive Projects and Individual Artists as well as Arts-in-Education programs.

Yonkers’ State Delegation Honors Yonkers Native and ALS Ice Bucket Challenge Co-Creator Patrick Quinn for Raising Awareness about ALS or Lou Gehrig’s Disease

(Albany - March 3rd) The state delegation that represents Yonkers, Senate Democratic Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins, Senator George Latimer, Assembly Member Shelley Mayer and Assembly Member Gary Pretlow, honored Yonkers native Patrick Quinn for raising awareness about ALS and the Ice Bucket Challenge. Quinn and a friend, Peter Frates of Boston, are credited with co-creating the Ice Bucket Challenge for ALS, that in 2014, spread like wildfire on social media.

Press Release: Senate Democratic Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins Urges Communities To Apply for the New NY Bridge's $20 Million Community Benefits Program

(Tarrytown - March 2nd) Senate Democratic Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins announces that applications are being accepted for the $20 million, new NY Bridge Community Benefits Program. The 35th State Senate District that Senator Stewart-Cousins’ represents includes Tarrytown and other rivertowns within the Town of Greenburgh where the bridge is being constructed.

“With the largest infrastructure project in the country continuing right here in Tarrytown, I urge communities to apply for these grants made available through the New York State Thruway Authority and the new bridge’s construction company,” said Senator Stewart-Cousins.

Leader Stewart-Cousins Meeting Future Baseball Hall-of-Famer Pedro Martinez

(Albany - February 26th) Though a New York fan, Leader Stewart-Cousins met Red Sox pitching great Pedro Martinez at the Capitol, as he makes his way to the Baseball Hall of Fame. Martinez, who was born in the Dominican Republican, has played for five major league teams including the New York Mets. The Senator joined with her colleagues, Senators Adriano Espaillat and Jose Peralta, in recognizing his on and off the field achievements with a resolution in his honor.

“As we discuss ways to clean up Albany and reform state government, a perfect ​place to start is the much maligned ​three/four men in a room​ budgetary​ ​process. ​In the past we had been led to believe that membership was based on constitutional roles and not simply the whims of the Governor​. Since​ membership​ has now been ​expanded I would hope all Legislative Conference Leaders will be ​included, ​giving all New Yorkers a voice in the budget. The more diversity and light we can shine on this process the better it is for everyone.”

Senator Stewart-Cousins Visit To Lincoln High School

(Yonkers - February 24th) Senator Stewart-Cousins went back into the classroom at Lincoln High School in Yonkers to speak to students during Black History Month. She discussed the landmark Supreme Court case, Brown vs. Board of Education, that ended racial segregation in schools. She also discussed the federal court ruling that required Yonkers to integrate its housing and schools. And the importance of participating in democracy, including exercising the right to vote. The Senator thanks Ms. Myers and Principal Sherman for the opportunity, and to the students for their participation.

Press Release: Senate Dems Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins Honors Civil Rights Pioneer & Centenarian Dr. Olivia Hooker of Greenburgh During Black History Month

(Albany - February 24th) In honor of Dr. Olivia Hooker’s 100th Birthday which falls during Black History Month, Senate Democratic Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins introduced a Senate Resolution and nominated Dr. Hooker for a Lifetime Achievement Award from the New York State Association of Black and Puerto Rican Legislators. The award and a copy of the Resolution were presented to Dr. Hooker during an event in her honor held by the Yonkers Human Rights Commission at the Hudson River Museum on February 21st.

Senator Stewart-Cousins Honoring Dr. Olivia Hooker with Senate Resolution

(February 21st - Greenburgh) Senator Stewart-Cousins recognized the extraordinary life and accomplishments of civil rights pioneer, the 100 year old Dr. Olivia Hooker of Greenburgh. A survivor of the 1921 race riot in Tulsa, Oklahoma, she would decades later fight for reparations for the destruction of what was referred to as Black Wall Street. She is the first African-American female to serve in the United States Coast Guard during World War II. She became a psychologist at a time when few women of color did. The Senator proudly gave her a copy of the Senate resolution in her honor that she introduced.

Leader Stewart-Cousins Honored at the Annual African-American Abrazo Hosted by Senator Ruben Diaz

(Bronx - February 20th) Senator Stewart-Cousins was honred by Senator Ruben Diaz at his annual African-American Abrazo. "Abrazo" means embrace, and the Senator felt the warmth of that embrace from fellow Senators who attended, as well as colleagues in government in the Assembly. Each February, during Black History Month, Senator Diaz holds this event. This year, Assemblymen Marcos Crespo, Luis Sepulveda and Michael Blake also joined in.

In honor of Black History Month, Senator Stewart-Cousinns spoke to Westchester Magazine about who inspired her, "Mary McLeod Bethune is an inspiration to me, with her remarkable life’s path and the rich legacy of education, civil rights, leadership, and political activism she left behind. With $1.50 and five students, she began a small school in Daytona Beach, Florida, in 1904 that became Bethune-Cookman University.

Volunteer New York's 65th Anniversary Celebration

(White Plains - February 11th) Senator Stewart-Cousins spoke about the importance of community service and giving back at the press conference celebrating Volunteer New York!'s 65th Anniversary. The press conference featured a symbolic phone which represents the first call made by Mrs. Jane Schwartz who founded the organization when she realized there was no resource to connect individuals with volunteer opportunities. Since then, Volunteer! New York has grown to serve Westchester County, Rockland County, and Putnam County, and continues to evolve to meet the changing needs of the community.
