In the News: Senate Dems To Cuomo: Dream Act Will Pass If It’s In The Budget (Source: NY State of Politics)

The Dream Act will be approved if it is folded into the 2014-15 state budget, Senate Minority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins and Queens Democrat Jose Peralta wrote in a letter to Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

The letter send on Thursday comes several days after the Senate voted down the measure by two votes, 30-29.

Thirteen members of the band – mostly from the Yonkers School District or St. Christopher’s School in Dobbs Ferry – and three coaches travelled to Albany to be recognized as the Senate passed the resolution.

Important Bills Passed This Week: Higher Safety Standards For Baby Cribs, Grants For Volunteer & Fire Ambulance Co., and More!

Higher Safety Standards For Baby Cribs Sold In New York: Recent federal rules established by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission enhanced crib design standards and prohibited the use of cribs that fail to meet those standards by all public child care providers and places of public accommodation. Senate Bill S.6250A would update crib safety standards to comply with the new federal rules. This would increase child safety in facilities where children receive care and supervision while limiting the jurisdiction of local Offices of Children and Family Services to those facilities.

Statement from Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins Regarding the Launch of Hope's Door Next Step Economic Empowerment Program

Last month, Hope's Door announced the launch of their "Next Step" program, which will help victims of domestic abuse attain financial independence by providing vocational training and assistance with interviewing skills, financial literacy, life skills and resume writing. The program will be funded by donations from the Avon Foundation, Verizon Foundation and the Sexauer Foundation. Senator Stewart-Cousins, a strong supporter of Hope's Door, commented on the launch of the program.

Neighborhood Preservation Coalition of NYS Advocacy Day on Affordable Housing

Democratic Conference Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins spoke at the Neighborhood Preservation Coalition "Affordable Housing" Rally on Monday, March 10th in Albany. Growing up in public housing, Leader Stewart-Cousins knows first-hand the struggles of finding a modestly-priced place to call home, and continues to fight to reduce homelessness in New York. At the rally, she discussed the importance of affordable housing for famillies, how organizations and individuals need to continue to bring issues of affordable housing to light, and how "we need to start thinking creatively about how we house our New York families".

White Plains St. Patrick's Day Parade

Participating in White Plain's St. Patrick's Day Annual Parade has become part of Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins' tradition in celebrating the Irish culture and heritage of many of her constituents. This is the 17th year White Plains hosted this celebration which occured on Saturday, March 8th and commenced at the intersection of Mamaroneck Avenue and Old Mamaroneck Road ending at City Hall. Also at the Parade was the Senator's colleague, Senator George Latimer.

Holocaust & Human Rights Education Center Opening

Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins was one of the first few to step foot in the Holocaust & Human Rights Education Center on Saturday, March 8th which was its grand opening. The purpose of the Education Center is "to enhance the teaching and learning of the lessons of the Holocaust and the right of all people to be treated with dignity and respect.
