Statement from Senator Stewart-Cousins on Tappan Zee Bridge Tolls & Infrastructure Investment

"The new Tappan Zee Bridge is the most ambitious and largest infrastructure investment project in the United States, and, once completed, it will have a positive impact for our community and all of New York State. As this project has progressed, I have consistently called for steps to be taken to ensure the tolls remain as low as possible, as higher tolls would have a negative impact on our local community and the entire state economy. I commend Governor Cuomo for his commitment to invest a portion of bank settlement funds into infrastructure projects like this one, located within my district in Tarrytown, to ease the burden on taxpayers and commuters, and allow New York and its residents to continue on a path toward prosperity."

Statement from Senate Democratic Conference Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins on the Women's Equality Act

"Today’s legislative maneuvering is clearly a political ploy by the Senate Republicans. To once again reject the full Women’s Equality Act is deeply disturbing. Let us remember that the final point is simply codifying current federal law  into New York State law and saying anything to the contrary is a deliberate distraction from their extremist anti-choice views. Women’s health should never be a partisan issue. In 1970, a dozen Senate Republicans joined with their Democratic colleagues to address reproductive rights in New York State. It is troubling that today’s Republican conference has once again proven that they are all against women’s reproductive rights."

Happy New Year!

"I want to wish everyone a very happy and healthy, prosperous and peaceful New Year!

A new year affords us the opportunity to turn the page. In 2015, I begin another term as the proud representative of the 35th District. I thank the voters for their trust and my colleagues as well, for electing me as the Senate Minority Leader - the first woman in state history to hold that position.

Our state faces many challenges and competing interests. I promise to seek common ground and work toward common sense solutions in order to provide the quality government services and protections that all New Yorkers expect and deserve. Let me know if you have ideas.

In the meantime, my warmest wishes to you and your family for a Happy New Year!
