In the News: Women Leaders Pen Letter to Cuomo, Ask Him to Support Local Wage Standards (Source: Legislative Gazette)

In a letter to Gov. Andrew Cuomo and the Legislature, 130 of the state's most powerful women urged the passage of #RaiseUpNY, legislation that would allow cities and counties to raise wages above the state's minimum of $8 an hour.

The #RaiseUpNY bill (S.6516/A.9036) is a plan to allow individual cities and counties within the state to set their own minimum wage, based on factors such as cost of living. But Gov. Andrew Cuomo has criticized the plan saying it would create a chaotic situation throughout the state by pitting cities and counties against each other.

Senate Democratic Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins visited Senator Kennedy in Buffalo on Sunday, April 12th to experience the challenges and opportunities facing Buffalo and Western New York. During her visit, Senator Kennedy highlighted the exciting progress happening throughout the area, especially along the waterfront and at the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus, and detailed the challenges that remain ahead. One of those challenges is ensuring the NFTA receives increased support from the state, so that region’s resurgence is not slowed down by a struggling transit system.

Over the weekend as part of the tour to get to know Buffalo, Democratic Conference Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins stopped by 145 Broadway, the home of the Colored Musician Club of Buffalo, frequented by jazz legends such as Duke Ellington, Billie Holiday, and Ella Fitzgerald during their time, and the longest operating African-American Musicians Club in the nation which still runs the best live jazz music in town.

Press Release: Democratic Conference Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins Announces Increased CHIPS Funding

Albany, NY - Democratic Conference Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins (D/I/WF – 35th District) announced today that the 2014-15 NYS Budget included a $40 million increase in CHIPS funding to help local governments pay for road repairs caused by the extreme winter weather. The additional funding increased this year’s CHIPS spending to $438 million Statewide.

The County of Westchester will be receiving $2,817,055.24 in CHIPS funding, an increase of $91,199.37 over the previous year. Municipalities in the 35th Senate District will receive a total of $5.5 million in CHIPS funding an increase of receive $487,000 over last year.

Women’s rights advocates and legislators released a letter Monday urging Gov. Andrew Cuomo to support a bill that would allow cities and counties to increase their own minimum wage.

“Failing to adequately raise the minimum wage has hampered our state’s economic growth and kept over 1.1 million hard-working New Yorkers in poverty,” State Democratic Conference Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins, D-Yonkers, said in a statement. “A majority of minimum wage earners are women, many of whom are desperately trying to provide for their families and make ends meet.”
