SENATE PASSES BILLS TO STRENGTHEN PENALTIES FOR CRIMES AGAINST FIREFIGHTERS AND RETIRED POLICE

The New York State Senate passed two bills to protect the first responders and law enforcement professionals who protect our communities. The bills would strengthen penalties for individuals who obstruct critical medical emergencies or assault retired police officers in acts of revenge.

Bill S2977, cosponsored by Senator Lanza, would make it a crime to intentionally obstruct a firefighter performing emergency medical care on a sick or injured person. Current law affords firefighters special protections while engaged in a variety of functions during the performance of their official duties. However, the law does not adequately protect firefighters performing emergency medical care.

SENATE PASSES BILL TO CREATE A REGISTRY OF VIOLENT OFFENDERS

“Brittany’s Law” Provides Public with Access to Information About Potentially Dangerous Felons

The New York State Senate today approved The Domestic Violence Protection Act –Brittany’s Law, a bill that would increase the safety and awareness of communities by increasing access to information about convicted violent felons. The bill (S513), cosponsored by Senator Andrew Lanza, would create a publicly accessible registry of all individuals convicted of a violent felony and allow local law enforcement to keep track of their location.

Senator Andrew Lanza today announced that more than 115,000 available jobs, a new record high, are now listed on the Jobs Express website (www.jobs.ny.gov). The site sorts thousands of jobs by region and occupation, and also allows users to search jobs based on zip code and travel distance.

SENATOR ANDREW LANZA & ASSEMBLYMAN MICHAEL CUSICK ANNOUNCE FINAL BUDGET AGREEMENT INCLUDES VZN TOLL DISCOUNT PROGRAM

Senator Andrew Lanza and Assemblyman Michael Cusick today announced that the final budget agreement includes $10.3 million for continued toll relief for Staten Island residents using the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge. The resident discount rate will remain $5.50 per trip.

SENATOR LANZA AUTHORS AND PASSES PROPERTY TAX CAP BILL TO PROVIDE RELIEF TO TAXPAYERS LIVING IN NEW YORK CITY

Senators Andrew Lanza, Marty Golden, Simcha Felder, Tony Avella and Diane Savino today passed property tax relief legislation, Senate Bill S.3709,  sponsored by Senator Lanza that would establish limitations upon real property tax levies in New York City. The bill places a cap on the growth of property taxes at two percent (or the Consumer Price Index (CPI), whichever is less).

LANZA, MALLIOTAKIS APPLAUD DOT ON SUSPENDING VIOLATIONS AT GARRETSON AVE. BUS LANE CAMERA

State Senator Andrew Lanza (R,C,I-Staten Island) and Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis (R,C,I-Brooklyn, Staten Island) are commending the New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) after the agency ceased issuing violations at a problematic bus lane camera at the intersection of Hylan Boulevard and Garretson Avenue.

The camera had been issuing violations for driving through the intersection in the southbound lane of Hylan Boulevard without making a right-hand turn onto Garretson Avenue, despite the fact that Garretson Avenue is a one-way street headed toward Hylan Boulevard.
