As New York State begins large-scale rebuilding efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, members of the New York State Senate today announced the formation of a bipartisan Senate task force charged with undertaking some of the recovery’s biggest challenges. As federal and state aid begins to materialize, task force members will play a pivotal role in developing the short and long-term plans that will help these communities get back on their feet. Each task force member represents one of New York State’s hardest hit areas and is thus uniquely qualified to pinpoint those neighborhoods and businesses that are most in need.
Informational Sessions Designed to Gauge Interest and Answer Questions about Specific Short-to-Long Term Housing Solutions for Islanders Displaced by Sandy
NYC Housing Recovery today announced “Housing Weekend” this Saturday and Sunday at the NYC Restoration Center on Staten Island, a series of informational sessions to gauge interest and answer questions about specific housing solutions for residents displaced by Hurricane Sandy.
During the initial weeks of the response to the Hurricane Sandy, it was essential for NYSDEC to work rapidly to prevent home heating oil spills from creating additional damage to the environment or presenting threats to public health.
The NYSDEC acted quickly to prevent spills by removing oil from basements and damaged tanks. As of early December, the NYSDEC’s initial emergency response actions have largely been concluded.
Senator Andrew Lanza today warned Staten Islanders to protect themselves from home repair scam artists, who will try to take advantage of unsuspecting homeowners who suffered property damage from Storm Sandy.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - Staten Islanders in need of free insurance assistance in the wake of Hurricane Sandy can get help Wednesday at state Sen. Andrew Lanza's hurricane relief headquarters.
Lanza (R-Staten Island) will host the Department of Financial Services at his headquarters to help homeowners, renters and business owners with insurance-related issues that have cropped up after the storm. Representatives from the department can help people contact their insurance companies if they haven't been able to reach them, and can answer questions about homeowners', renters' and business owners' insurance coverage, according to Lanza's office.
DFS Representatives Available To Assist Homeowners, Renters & Business Owners With Insurance Questions At Senator Lanza’s Hurricane Relief Headquarters Wednesday, Dec. 5th, 9 A.M. To 5 P.M.
Senator Andrew Lanza is hosting the Department of Financial Services at his Hurricane Relief Headquarters to help to homeowners, renters and business owners with insurance-related issues stemming from damage caused by Storm Sandy. Department representatives will help citizens contact their insurers if they have been unable to do so and answer questions about homeowners’, renters’ and business owners’ insurance coverage.
Recovering from disaster is usually a gradual process. Safety is a primary issue, as are mental and physical well-being. If assistance is available, knowing how to access it makes the process faster and less stressful.
Your first concern after a disaster is your family’s health and safety. You need to consider possible safety issues and monitor family health and well-being.
Be aware of exhaustion. Don’t try to do too much at once. Set priorities and pace yourself. Get enough rest.
Drink plenty of clean water. Eat well.
Wear sturdy work boots and gloves.
The Transitional Sheltering Assistance (TSA) helps survivors stay in hotels/motels if their homes were damaged from Hurricane Sandy. FEMA has a dedicated toll free number for survivors who are eligible for TSA to call and find a hotel and request accessible transportation (if needed) from their shelter to the hotel. Please note: Hotels participate in the TSA program independently and may have to honor previous reservations.
The number is 866-863-8673. Hours of operation are 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. EST, seven days/week.
If survivors receive a letter from FEMA saying that they are ineligible for assistance, make sure they read the letter very carefully. They may need to provide further information or documentation in order to qualify. The letter will explain exactly what additional information is needed. They may still be approved for help from FEMA. They may also receive a letter from FEMA stating they were ineligible simply because they did not yet received a settlement from their insurance carrier.
If a determination letter is received stating that they are ineligible and they believe an error was made, they have the right to file an appeal.
Appeals may be made on any decision within 60 days of the date listed on the last decision letter.
NYC Rapid Repairs is a FREE program to help residential property owners affected by Hurricane Sandy make emergency repairs. These emergency repairs will allow residents to stay in their homes so that they can complete more permanent repairs and finishes. Emergency repairs include permanent or temporary restoration of heat, power and hot water, and other limited repairs to protect a home from further significant damage. A homeowner must first register for NYC Rapid Repairs. The City will then schedule an appointment for a qualified NYC Rapid Repairs Team to make certain repairs for all eligible homeowners.
One of the most pressing issues facing all New Yorkers is increasing property taxes. For many, it is the defining factor that contributes to their exodus from our City and State. Now more than ever we need to enact a common sense plan that takes an aggressive stance and puts an end to out of control property tax increases.
