Free mammograms for uninsured Staten Island women

Uninsured women age 40 and over who have not had a mammogram in the past year can sign up for a free screening Sunday at the Staten Island Hindu Temple in Sunnyside.

Project Renewal’s Scan Van will be on hand to offer the mobile mammograms beginning at 10 a.m. outside 1318 Victory Blvd. An appointment is necessary and can be made by calling 800-564-6868. The service also accepts Medicaid/Medicare and most other insurance plans, in addition to being offered free to uninsured eligible women.

The screenings are funded by the Cancer Services Program of Staten Island, Richmond County Savings Foundation and Avon Breast Care Fund.

Clean Streets=Clean Beaches - A day of service to help clean up some of the local beaches that New Yorkers enjoy the most

The New York City Department of Environmental Protection, together with the Department of Sanitation and the Department of Parks and Recreation, recently launched their Clean Streets=Clean Beaches campaign to educate citizens about the effects that improperly disposed of street litter can have on our enjoyment of the beaches during the hot summer months. During a rain storm, street litter can wash into storm drains and be carried into local waterways and onto the beaches.

MTA Staten Island Railway (SIR) to rehabilitate Armstrong Avenue Bridge May 11-13, 2012

Please be advised that MTA Staten Island Railway (SIR) will be rehabilitating the Armstrong Avenue Bridge during the weekend of May  11-13, 2012.

The rehabilitation of the Armstrong Avenue Bridge includes the repair and painting of steel members, abutment walls, waterproofing of the bridge deck including removal and replacement of tracks.  MTA NYCT/SIR is undertaking the rehabilitation of the bridge as part of a $21M project to rehabilitate eight bridges along SIR.

Staten Island Railway (SIR) to shut down service at St. George Terminal April 13-16


Beginning April 13-16, for two consecutive weekends, Staten Island Railway (SIR) plans to shut down service at the St. George Terminal so that vital drainage work can be completed in the St. George Tunnel. Alternate free shuttle bus service will be provided to accommodate Staten Island Railway customers.
