SENATE PASSES LANZA'S BILL PREVENTING HUMAN TRAFFICKING AND GIVING GREATER PROTECTION TO TRAFFICKED VICTIMS

Trafficking Victims Protection and Justice Act Passes Unanimously in Senate

The New York State Senate today unanimously passed legislation to save lives by preventing the exploitation of children and adults who are victims of human trafficking. The Trafficking Victims Protection and Justice Act (S5879B), sponsored by Senator Andrew Lanza (R-I-C, Staten Island), toughens penalties against those who buy and sell young women, men and children and reduces the stigma defendants may face when they are victims of the massive $32 billion sex trafficking industry.

Measures Will Help Address Growing Heroin and Opioid Use in New York

The New York State Senate today will act on 23 bills to address issues surrounding the increase in heroin and opioid abuse, addiction, and related crimes in New York. The bills are part of a comprehensive legislative package proposed by the bipartisan New York State Senate Joint Task Force on Heroin and Opioid Addiction in a report released in May.

SENATOR LANZA ANNOUNCES NEARLY 100K JOBS AVAILABLE NOW ON JOBS EXPRESS

Senator Andrew Lanza today announced that more than 96,000 jobs are currently available and listed on the State’s Jobs Express website (www.jobs.ny.gov). The site sorts thousands of jobs by region and occupation, and also allows users to search jobs based on zip code and travel distance.

New businesses and job listings are added every day. Throughout the month of April 2014, there were more than 73,000 new job openings listed on Jobs Express – a 22 percent increase from April 2013 – and more than 78,000 unique website visitors. More than 7,100 businesses posted a new job order on the site in April 2014. Businesses using the site fulfilled nearly 55,000 job orders in April 2014.

The New York State Senate Joint Task Force on Heroin and Opioid Addiction today released a report summarizing the findings of statewide forums held to examine the issues surrounding the increase in drug abuse, addiction and drug related crimes in New York. The report includes a comprehensive package of bills recommended for action this legislative session that target prevention, treatment, and enforcement issues raised during extensive testimony provided by dozens of experts, parents, and concerned New Yorkers.

SENATORS DIANE SAVINO AND ANDREW LANZA HONOR TWO STATEN ISLAND VETERANS WITH NEW YORK SENATE VETERANS' HALL OF FAME INDUCTION

Albany, NY- Staten Island Senators Diane J. Savino (DIW-North Shore) Andrew Lanza (RC Mid-Island and South Shore) honored two veterans today with their induction to the New York State Veterans Hall of Fame. Senator Andrew Lanza posthumously nominated Army Staff Sgt. Michael Ollis to the NY Senate Veterans' Hall of Fame. At the early age of 24, Ollis bravely gave his life saving another soldier. The award was received by his parents, Linda and Bob.Senator Diane J. Savino nominated long time Veteran advocate and Vietnam nurse Mary LaManna to the NY Senate Veteran Hall of Fame.  Mary was joined by the love of her life, Dennis McLoone, also a Vietnam veteran and family.

Construction crews begin work on project that will create 2,250 jobs and $872 million in economic activity for the region

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and Senator Andrew J. Lanza today announced the official commencement of construction on a $1.5 billion public-private partnership (PPP) to replace the Goethals Bridge with a new state-of-the-art cable-stayed bridge. The replacement bridge will connect Staten Island with Elizabeth, New Jersey and serve as a key thoroughfare for the transport of billions of dollars of goods and millions of travelers throughout the region.
