Construction crews begin work on project that will create 2,250 jobs and $872 million in economic activity for the region

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and Senator Andrew J. Lanza today announced the official commencement of construction on a $1.5 billion public-private partnership (PPP) to replace the Goethals Bridge with a new state-of-the-art cable-stayed bridge. The replacement bridge will connect Staten Island with Elizabeth, New Jersey and serve as a key thoroughfare for the transport of billions of dollars of goods and millions of travelers throughout the region.

LOCAL OFFICIALS ISSUE PUBLIC APPEAL FOR HELP IN RELOCATING TURKEYS

Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis, State Senator Andrew Lanza, Borough President James Oddo, and Councilman Steven Matteo are looking for suitable new homes for the population of wild turkeys now inhabiting Ocean Breeze and its adjacent neighborhoods.  

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) recently issued permits for the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to perform a capture-removal operation, resulting in relocation of a portion of the birds to the Catskill Animal Sanctuary in Saugerties, New York.  Due to the limited space at the sanctuary, however, a number of the turkeys had to be slaughtered for food processing.

Senator Andrew Lanza, Assemblyman Matthew Titone, Assemblyman Joseph Borelli and Senator Diane Savino announced today that the New York Conference of Italian-American State Legislators is now accepting applications for four $2,000 scholarships to be awarded June 9, 2014 at their Annual Legislative Conference Day.

This year, the Italian-American State Legislators Conference will be awarding four $2,000 scholarships to four current or future college students from New York State. Eligibility will be based upon the student’s grade point average, interest in pursuing a higher education, involvement in the local community as well as individual financial need.

SENATE PASSES BILL TO HELP PREVENT OVERDOSE DEATHS BY INCREASING ACCESS TO NALOXONE

Measure Gives More People Access to Antidote That Prevents Accidental Overdose Deaths from Heroin and Other Opioids

The New York State Senate today passed legislation to help save lives by increasing access to a highly effective antidote for accidental drug overdose known as Naloxone or Narcan. The bill (S6477B), cosponsored by Senator Andrew Lanza, allows authorized health care professionals to issue non-patient specific orders for Naloxone to certified training programs and pharmacies, which could then distribute the Naloxone kits and instruct how to properly administer it. If timely administered, Naloxone can prevent an overdose death.

Cuomo and Senator Andrew Lanza today announced the launch of the Bridge to Success loan program, now available through participating lenders committing at least $20 million to expand access to short-term bridge loans for Minority and Women-Owned Business Enterprises (MWBEs). The program will provide qualified MWBEs with the short-term resources they need to participate in up to $1 billion in contracting opportunities with New York State.

As the debate over the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s approval of Zohydro ER, a powerful extended-release painkiller, continues to grow, Senator Andrew J. 2014 LOVE YOUR BLOCK GRANT PROGRAM - Applications Now Available (Deadline Feb. 20th)

The 2014 Love Your Block grant program and applications are now available. 

Love Your Block is an initiative of NYC Service in partnership with Citizens Committee for New York City that provides a unique opportunity for City resident groups to transform and improve their communities through local action while leveraging City services.  Grants of up to $1,000 are awarded for block beautification projects that utilize City services from NYC Parks, NYC Department of Transportation, and the NYC Department of Sanitation. In addition to the cash grant and City services, winning groups receive project planning and community building assistance, as well as support with local media coverage for the project.

The Love Your Block application deadline is February 20th 2014.
