Increases Penalties For Participating in Illegal High-speed Vehicle Races

The New York State Senate today passed legislation to increase penalties for unlawful high-speed car racing which has caused numerous accidents across the state, including the deaths of a 17-year-old Staten Island girl and a 5-year-old Queens boy. Michelle and Jordan’s Law (S.2938A) is sponsored by Senator Andrew Lanza (R-I, Staten Island) and stems from tragic crashes involving suspected drag racing at excessive speeds.

Antonio Meucci Young Inventors’ Competition - Registration now open to children in grades 4 through 8 who live and go to school on Staten Island

Throughout his lifetime, Antonio Meucci (1808-1889) was responsible for many inventions, improvements and ideas. In addition to his discovery of the telephone in 1848 and his development of that instrument over the next 30 years, Meucci manufactured smokeless candles, created a tea and coffee filtering system, made improvements in oil and kerosene lamps, found a way to make paper from wood pulp, and even canned tomato sauce. In keeping with his legacy of ingenuity and innovation, the Garibaldi-Meucci Museum, in conjunction with Time Warner Cable, is sponsoring the Antonio Meucci Young Inventors’ Competition.

Borough Taxis: Let the City Know What You Think!

 You may have heard about the Mayor’s proposal to establish a new category of livery cars that can make on-street pickups outside of Manhattan just like yellow cabs do. It will give many New Yorkers a safe, reliable and convenient option for getting around. The program aims to improve taxi availability while bringing yellow-taxi-like amenities (e.g., metered fares, credit/debit card payment, easier-to-spot cabs) to the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island. The City wants to hear from residents about your experiences with taxis and car services and has a developed a brief online survey where your voice can be heard.

SENATOR LANZA ANNOUNCES FREE MAMMOGRAPHY SCREENINGS

Breast cancer is the second leading cause of death among women in New York State.  According to the American Cancer Society, approximately 15,000 new cases are diagnosed each year.  Until the cause and cure for breast cancer is found, the best tool in the fight against breast cancer is education and early detection.  A mammogram can detect breast cancer almost 24 months before it can be manually detected.

Applications are now being accepted for the 2011 Edna A. Lauterbach Scholarship, a fund established exclusively for New York State nurses that wish to further their careers in home and community-based care.

Registered (RNs) and Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) are urged to apply for scholarships of up to $2,000 that can be used for tuition, books, specialty training and education, and other educational-related expenses.

Website Offers Qualifying Guidelines For Using FreeFile

Senator Andrew Lanza today urged taxpayers to take advantage of FreeFile - a program providing free state and federal tax preparation and e-filing services to qualified New York State taxpayers.

Half of New York's taxpayers qualify for free or reduced fees to file electronically through FreeFile. You may be eligible if you earned $58,000 or less in 2010 or you served in the military in 2010.
