The Department of Education informed elected officials today that students on the autism spectrum at PS 4 will be placed in IS 75, the school their parents have been requesting for the past year. SENATOR LANZA ANNOUNCES FREE MAMMOGRAPHY SCREENINGS

Breast cancer is the second leading cause of death among women in New York State.  According to the American Cancer Society, approximately 15,000 new cases are diagnosed each year.  Until the cause and cure for breast cancer is found, the best tool in the fight against breast cancer is education and early detection.  A mammogram can detect breast cancer almost 24 months before it can be manually detected.

Applications now being accepted for the 2011 Edna A. Lauterbach Scholarship Fund for New York State nurses


Applications are now being accepted for the 2011 Edna A. Lauterbach Scholarship, a fund established exclusively for New York State nurses that wish to further their careers in home and community-based care.

Registered (RNs) and Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) are urged to apply for scholarships of up to $2,000 that can be used for tuition, books, specialty training and education, and other educational-related expenses.

Website Offers Qualifying Guidelines For Using FreeFile

Senator Andrew Lanza today urged taxpayers to take advantage of FreeFile - a program providing free state and federal tax preparation and e-filing services to qualified New York State taxpayers.

Half of New York's taxpayers qualify for free or reduced fees to file electronically through FreeFile. You may be eligible if you earned $58,000 or less in 2010 or you served in the military in 2010.

SENATOR LANZA REMINDS STATEN ISLANDERS TO APPLY FOR STAR AND OTHER EXEMPTIONS TO SAVE MONEY ON PROPERTY TAXES – Deadline March 15th

              Most Staten Island residents are enrolled in the Basic STAR Program which is available to all New Yorkers who own and live in their home. In addition to the Basic STAR program, homeowners may qualify for other exemptions such as the Enhanced STAR Exemption (for seniors over 65), Senior Citizens Homeowners’ Exemption, the Veteran’s Exemption and the Disabled Homeowners’ Exemption. Senator Lanza has worked with the Department of Finance to develop a way for homeowners to view what exemptions they currently carry as well as those they may be eligible for.

Free help available for filing tax return

Volunteers for VITA, the IRS' Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, will be offering free tax preparation to low-income and senior Staten Islanders at a number of locations in the upcoming weeks. The program offers assistance to people who are 60 and older, and to people who have an income of approximately $49,000 or less. Military personnel and their families also receive free tax preparation services. Taxpayers should bring with them proof of identification, including a Social Security card; wage and earnings statements (W-2 Form) from all employers, interest statements from banks, a copy of last year's tax return, if available, and other relevant information about income and expenses.
