SENATOR ANDREW LANZA ANNOUNCES COLLEGIATE SCHOLARSHIPS

Senator Andrew Lanza (24th District) announced today that the New York Conference of Italian-American State Legislators is now accepting applications for $1,500 scholarships to be awarded June 10th at their Annual Legislative Conference Day. Scholarship winners must be present to receive their awards.

Given the high costs of college, Senator Lanza recommends that Staten Island students apply to the Conference for these prestigious scholarships for the chance to secure extra help with education expenses.

Earth Day and Arbor Day -- Plant a Tree!

Superstorm Sandy ravaged trees and greenery around our homes and neighborhoods, and we’re just beginning to see the long term damage some trees and shrubs suffered.

Thousands upon thousands of trees were lost on Staten Island, but we now have a chance to restore what was lost. Staten Island’s trees and shrubs help reduce storm water runoff, prevent soil erosion, provide habitat and shade, beautify the landscape and protect our bays and harbors.

This year, April 22 is Earth Day and April 26 is Arbor Day -- the perfect time to plant a tree to replace one that was lost.

SENATE PASSES ‘ALIX’S LAW’

Bill Would Make it Illegal for Driver to Leave Scene After Vehicle Hits Any Object

The New York State Senate today passed “Alix’s Law”, sponsored by Senators Patrick Gallivan and Andrew J. Lanza, to close a legal loophole and hold intoxicated drivers accountable for leaving the scene of an accident.

The legislation (S1698A) responds to a drunk driving accident that killed a teenage girl in Amherst, Erie County. On July 8, 2011, 18-year-old Alix Rice was killed by a drunk driver as she road home on her longboard. The driver argued that he was not aware he had hit a person and he was acquitted on the felony charge of leaving the scene of an accident.

SENATOR LANZA DETAILS MORE THAN $375 MILLION IN CHILD TAX CREDITS AVAILABLE TO NEW YORK FAMILIES

More than 1 million middle class families across New York State will benefit from a child tax credit that will be enacted as part of the 2013-2014 Budget, Senator Lanza announced today.

As part of the agreement reached by the Governor, the Senate, and the Assembly, families with incomes between $40,000 and $300,000 will be eligible to receive a new child tax credit of $350 per-year for three years. The credit, which will be delivered as a check, will begin in 2014.

The information below details how many families in New York City will benefit from the child tax credit.

SENATE REPUBLICANS ACT TO RESTORE MILLIONS OF DOLLARS CUT FROM WOMEN’S HEALTH PROGRAMS IN GOVERNOR’S BUDGET

Adelphi University Breast Cancer Program and Funding for Rape Crisis Centers among Those Targeted for Reduction

Senate Republicans today announced they would restore millions of dollars for important women’s health programs - - including initiatives to help women overcome the trauma of rape, eating disorders and breast cancer- - that were targeted for reduction as part of the Governor’s Executive Budget.

Approximately $8 million in cuts in these areas were rejected as part of the Senate’s one-house budget plan, which was expected to be acted on later today.

Senator Lanza is partnering with the New York Legal Assistance Group (NYLAG) to help victims of Hurricane Sandy deal with a range of legal issues.
