SENATE PASSES MEASURE TO INCREASE PENALTIES FOR SELLING DRUGS IN PARKS OR ON PLAYGROUNDS

The New York State Senate today passed a bill increasing penalties for people who sell drugs in playgrounds and parks. The bill (S.2173A) would further protect kids and their families from the dangers of people who prey on children.

“People who try to take advantage of our children should be dealt harsher penalties,” said Senator Lanza. “We need to protect kids from the dangers of drug dealers, especially in places where they’re supposed to be safe – schools, parks, and playgrounds. This legislation expands on the work we have done in the past to protect kids from these predators in their schools and will hopefully make playgrounds and parks totally off limits to drug dealers.”

SENATE PASSES PACKAGE OF BILLS TO TOUGHEN PENALTIES FOR SEX CRIMES

The New York State Senate has passed a package of bills cracking down on rapists and sex offenders by creating new crimes and increasing penalties.

Legislation (S.1459) cosponsored by Senator Andrew Lanza ensures significantly longer prison sentences for serial rapists. Under current law, it is possible for a judge to issue concurrent sentences for multiple counts arising from separate and distinct acts of rape. The legislation would require consecutive prison sentences for each separate count of first-degree rape when an individual is convicted of multiple counts, keeping dangerous felons off the streets for as long as possible.

Earth Day and Arbor Day -- Plant a Tree!

Superstorm Sandy ravaged trees and greenery around our homes and neighborhoods, and we’re just beginning to see the long term damage some trees and shrubs suffered.

Thousands upon thousands of trees were lost on Staten Island, but we now have a chance to restore what was lost. Staten Island’s trees and shrubs help reduce storm water runoff, prevent soil erosion, provide habitat and shade, beautify the landscape and protect our bays and harbors.

This year, April 22 is Earth Day and April 26 is Arbor Day -- the perfect time to plant a tree to replace one that was lost.

Bill Would Make it Illegal for Driver to Leave Scene After Vehicle Hits Any Object

The New York State Senate today passed “Alix’s Law”, sponsored by Senators Patrick Gallivan and Andrew J. Lanza, to close a legal loophole and hold intoxicated drivers accountable for leaving the scene of an accident.

The legislation (S1698A) responds to a drunk driving accident that killed a teenage girl in Amherst, Erie County. On July 8, 2011, 18-year-old Alix Rice was killed by a drunk driver as she road home on her longboard.
